Author and presenter Tolstoy
Ivan Tolstoy: Our program is today dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the death of the prose writer, playwright, poet, storyteller, publicist, journalist Alexei Nikolayevich Tolstoy, who died on February 23, 1945, not having survived until the day of victory.
Controversial figure. Fans of his literary talent, perhaps, are as much as opponents of his civil position. I hope that in today's program, our guest with our guest will try to understand these contradictions and understand what place in the history of Russian literature takes Alexei Tolstoy. Our guest today is Inna Georgievna Andreeva, head of the Museum of Alexei Tolstoy in Moscow.
First of all, there are several legends around Alexei Tolstoy that I would like to immediately dispel. Inna Georgievna, I am counting on your help. The origin of the family is fat. They say that the fat people are namesakes - writers, artists, sculptors, etc. - And some say that this is one big clan. What does science say about this about this?
Inna Andreeva: A great genus, the leading beginning from the Lithuanian prince of Indris or, as it sounds anciently, intrigues, which means "wild boar". Indris had two sons - Litvinos and Zimonten. Zimonten was childless, and the family of Litvinos already went very branched - the family of Tolstoy. Some of the historians believe that this very indrica - in the baptism of Leonty - was actually not an indital, but one of the sons of the Mongol Khan Ten Gri. In fact, the bulk of historians debunk this theory, so we will dwell on Indris, the Prince of Lithuania. Further, there is a very branched Tree Tolstoy, and let's come, specifically, to Peter Andreyevich Tolstoy.
Ivan Tolstoy: Please remind us who it is.
Inna Andreeva: The same Pyotr Andreevich, the famous Peter Andreevich, a diplomat, ally of Peter the Great, a messenger in Turkey from Russia, who rendered invaluable services to the Fatherland and was awarded for this both the Order of Andrew the First -Called, and the graphic title - this is where the Counts of Tolstoy come from.
Ivan Tolstoy: Could you clarify why you specifically received the thick count's title.
Inna Andreeva: There are already several versions. One of their most stable versions is not for a very plausible act, that is, it was Pyotr Andreevich Tolstoy who brought Tsarevich Alexei back to Russia. There is even such a legend that before his death, Tsarevich Alexei cursed the family of Tolstoy to the twenty -sixth knee.
Ivan Tolstoy: And where to count - from Indris, or from Peter Andreevich?
Inna Andreeva: No, it is from Peter Andreevich, unfortunately.
Ivan Tolstoy: Then this is for a long time: what is the fate of Peter Andreevich?
Inna Andreeva: He finished badly. They say he was exiled, like Peter’s closest ally, to Solovki. Solovki, it turns out, is not as close to the past as it might seem.
Ivan Tolstoy: Is it true that he was exiled there with his son? By the way, he himself was then a deep old man.
Inna Andreeva: Yes, of course. I would like to return to the continuation of the genus, since the genealogical tree, I repeat, branched, and this is a topic for a three -hour conversation, if not more. Therefore, we will dwell on subsequent fat. This is Fedor Tolstoy, from which more specific branches have already gone. Many are interested in the question of whether relatives Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy and Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy, Alexei Konstantinovich Tolstoy, Tolstoy-American, Fedor Konstantinovich Tolstoy, medalist, etc. Yes, of course, they are relatives. Look, they have a common ancestor, Pyotr Andreevich Tolstoy. Peter Andreevich had two children. One is non -passing, and Andrei, Ilya, etc., are already coming along the line of the other son - Ivan - and Lev Nikolaevich, Alexei Konstantinovich, the same branch, are already coming from Ilya. Ivan, who has two sons, Andrei and Fedor, then with Fedor Stepan, Peter, Alexander, etc., and we are already approaching Fedor. Nikolai Alexandrovich, who had five children, and the child of one of them was Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy. When they ask what specific ties to Lev Nikolayevich and Alexei Nikolaevich, you begin to clearly count, and then it turns out that the relatives are very distant-the four-cosepa, grand-pra-great-trim Lev Nikolaevich. It seems that this, as they say, is "the tenth water in jelly." In fact, they have a single ancestor, Pyotr Andreevich Tolstoy, and therefore, of course, all thick relatives.
Ivan Tolstoy: As Blok said, "the nobles are all relatives to each other", well, and even more so. There is a stable legend that Alexei Tolstoy is not the son of his father. After all, there was a big family drama before his birth. Please tell me a few words about it.
Inna Andreeva: Of course, it was a very popular version among the first Russian emigration in the 20s and 30s. Berberova wrote about this. In fact, this is not at all. Alexey Nikolaevich was the fifth child of Count Nikolai Alexandrovich Tolstoy and his wife, Alexandra Leontyevna Turgeneva. Alexandra Leontyevna Turgeneva, a rather famous children's writer, pursuist, a woman of advanced views. She fell in love with a young razor, a small nobleman, Alexei Bostom and went to him, because Nikolai Alexandrovich Tolstoy was typical, in her opinion, Smem, and she, like all Russian women, tried to save Alexei Bostom, and he was unhappy, he had poor health and there were still many luppers.
Ivan Tolstoy: I fell in love with flour.
Inna Andreeva: Of course, of course. And she went to Bostom, but Nikolai Alexandrovich, meeting Bostom on the train, is known, - not shooting at him a little, found out the address of their whereabouts and returned, by force, Alexander Leontyevna. They lived together again.
Ivan Tolstoy: Just a Brazilian series.
Inna Andreeva: Well, what are you! At the same time, Bostr wrote weeping letters, begging Alexander Leontyevna will return, claiming that without her he was not life, etc.
Ivan Tolstoy: So how to figure out which of them a child?
Inna Andreeva: In one of the letters, when she refuses to return for serious reasons, she writes that "unfortunately, it became completely impossible because I am pregnant and already in the fifth month." And, nevertheless, Bostr nevertheless persuades her, and she still leaves for him, and when the court had already taken place, on which the Tolstoy spouses were bred, Alexander Leontyevna swore that the child Alyosha - Alexei Nikolaevich Tolstoy was already born - the son of Bostom.
Ivan Tolstoy: And at the same time she knew that she was breaking the oath?
Inna Andreeva: She makes an oath of crime. This is time. Secondly, understand her as a woman and as a mother. Count Tolstoy left the three surviving children - the girl of Praskovya died at the age of five - Alexander, Elizabeth and Mstislav herself. He categorically forbade them to communicate with his mother. Therefore, she, at least to leave her at least little, made an oath -crime. But what's interesting. Before his death, Count Nikolai Alexandrovich Tolstoy made a will in favor of four of his children, referring to Alyosha. This suggests that he knew very well that Alexey was his son.
Ivan Tolstoy: Samodur as a tyrant, and his head did not leave at the last moment.
Inna Andreeva: You know, we often say, especially visitors to the museum, "Well, what do you want, the count still." It sounds very cute.
Ivan Tolstoy: Little Alexei Tolstoy settled with his mother and stepfather on the farm, near Samara, and what happened to him further? What way did he go?
Inna Andreeva: You know, they do not immediately become a writer. In principle, he really loved to read various books with his mother, read a lot, etc., but, nevertheless, he went to study at the famous St. Petersburg Technological Institute. He, in fact, finished him, just did not receive a diploma, but, in principle, went through the entire training course.
Just in connection with this, always, when you talk about his works, especially devoted to the technique, - and the “Hyperboloid engineer Garin”, and “Aelita”, and “Riot of Machines” - you are not surprised at some things that Alexei Tolstoy understood because he had a serious technical education. But in Russia, the beginning of the century was happening something unimaginable. Someone became a poet, or it seemed to him that he was becoming a poet, someone a writer, someone an actor. Life was seething, and there was such craziness, the fear of the coming, as before some kind of disaster. And on this wave there were all kinds of literary, theatrical, philosophical associations, which young Alexei Tolstoy could not help but pass by. Of course, he also turned on the famous “tower” of Vyacheslav Ivanov, in all kinds of literary cabaret, etc. And since maternal education, instilling in her love for language, for literature, he had his own action and was not for nothing, he felt a call to work with a word, with a language, and began to write poetry. Having left for Paris, he met Nikolai
Stepanovich Gumilev, and from here his poetic activity began. Then there was an acquaintance with Bryusov, with Andrei Bely, with Vyacheslav Ivanov, etc. He released two poetic collections, "lyrics" and "behind blue rivers." Yes, criticism can blaspheme them for some kind of imitation, for trying to neighborhood with symbolism. But, nevertheless, they were sincere. They walked from the heart, and not without reason Valery Bryusov praised these verses. Even Gumilev, who was very reverent towards the versification, treated them on the verge, either scolded it very much, then praised it very much - and recommended Tolstoy as a rather interesting new poet who appeared on the horizon of Russian literature. “Another Tolstoy,” as he said, was right, since Tolstoy’s subsequent work proved that he is a writer of God's mercy.
Ivan Tolstoy: That is, we can say that mother in him defeated both dad and stepfather. You said that his mother, Alexander Leontyevna, nee Turgenev. What is these Turgenevs? What do they have to do with the writer Ivan Sergeyevich?
Inna Andreeva: The Turgenevs also have a very branched tree, but speaking closer, she is a relative of Nikolai Turgenev, the very one who was a Decembrist.
Ivan Tolstoy: So, there is, also, Alexander, who was a friend of Pushkin and went to bury him in the Holy Mountains?
Inna Andreeva: Of course, and I must say that in the biography of Alexei Nikolayevich Tolstoy, whose favorite poet, by the way, was Pushkin, a very clear connection with this beloved poet was visible. And from the side of the Tolstoy-American, who finally enlightened Goncharov for Pushkin, and from Alexander Turgenev. That is, these ties with Pushkin Alexei Nikolayevich can see very serious. In general, I think there are connections and biographical and creative and, by the way, behavioral, which is very interesting, and this is a separate topic for conversation.
Ivan Tolstoy: But kinship with Nikolai and Alexander Turgenevs is also not straight, but cousin. Alexandra Leontyevna was the granddaughter of Boris Turgenev, who was the cousin of this two. They called him in letters "a vile serf, brother Boris." So, Alexei Nikolaevich is still not from the Decembrist, and not from Alexander Pushkin, but from the "vile serfdom, Boris's brother." Naturally, we do not choose relatives for ourselves. But the relationship with the writer, Ivan Sergeyevich what?
Inna Andreeva: Very distant.
Ivan Tolstoy: I remember that in the encyclopedic dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron, in my opinion the author was Semevsky, it was said that Nikolai Turgenev (the Decembrist, who was exile and did not return because he was waiting for the death sentence of Nicholas the Great) with Ivan Sergeyevich abroad, in Paris, and they counted themselves, the article said, in the article, the article said, in the article, in the article, in the article. Relatives, but, says a vocabulary article, it is not possible to trace these family ties. Turgenev is the surname of the native of the Golden Horde, and, as far as I remember, young Alexei Tolstoy used, somewhat reinforcing, this surname in his early years and even signed this surname.
Inna Andreeva: You know, I don’t remember this.
Ivan Tolstoy: Some of his stories are signed by the pseudonym "Mirza Turgen", and the village, where some of his early things take place, is called Turenevo.
Inna Andreeva: Of course, of course. He was proud of his ancestors.
Ivan Tolstoy: Alexei Tolstoy, for most people, is somehow not associated with people of the Silver Age, although he was all sprouted and was familiar with a huge number of people. Almost the name of the cabaret "Wandering Dog" belongs to him. But still, he is not associated with the silver age. Maybe this is some kind of mass error, or is there something in it?
Inna Andreeva: You know, in my opinion, this is massive oblivion. For experts, Alexei Tolstoy is very associated with the silver age and his representatives. Nevertheless, you correctly said that Tolstoy was one of the founders of the cafes of the poets "Wandering Dog", and, accordingly, the "halt of comedians". This is time. Alexey Nikolaevich Tolstoy was friendly with Gumilev. After their acquaintance in Paris, they even published the magazine "Island" - the famous magazine for those who are interested in the silver age.
Nadezhda: I would like a program about such a wonderful person as Alexei Tolstoy to be multi -part! In my favorite children's book "Childhood of Nikita" you feel some isolation of the family living in the middle of the steppe. Is this somehow due to the fact that his mother, Alexander Leontyevna, was excluded from secular life on a peculiar island of nature?
Inna Andreeva: I completely agree with our listener. It was, on the one hand, so. On the other hand, Alexander Leontyevna wanted this. She wanted this dissolution in the family, nature, and in general, “Nikita’s childhood” is a book of happiness. It is distanced by the world in which there are wars, blood, grief. In my opinion, this is the happiest book in the world.
Ivan Tolstoy: No wonder she has a subtitle - "The Tale of many Excellent things."
Inna Andreeva: Of course. And this distance, in my opinion, was intended, and it was deliberately observed by Alexei Nikolaevich, because he wrote a book about many of the most excellent things - a book of happiness, and happiness cannot be adjacent to grief.
Ivan Tolstoy: Maybe this can also be added that he wrote her in a situation of isolation - in exile, feeling his isolation from his homeland, and this, perhaps, was repeatedly strengthened by the feeling that was transmitted to the hero of this story and the whole atmosphere of this farm.
Inna Andreeva: Yes, and this is the savings of a child from all troubles of grievances - this is also felt: this, by the way, is my favorite book.
Alexander (St. Petersburg): "Childhood of Nikita" and "Viper" I love with Tolstoy. I have three questions. First: I see, the block and Tolstoy are antipodes, but where does such a pathological hatred of the block come from? Bunin is understandable, but Tolstoy is not quite. The second: everyone has an idol of Pushkin, and from modern writers, who was a “significant” writer for Tolstoy of his contemporaries? Proust, Joyce, Kafka - I see, no - they are also antipodes. And the third: Features of the style of Tolstoy. They say that he has an archaic style, and no innovations in him are present. What can you say about this?
Inna Andreeva: In fact, I believe that there was no “nature” of hatred. I understand what our listener has in mind - this is a poet Bessonov in “Walking in the Treas”, Pierrot in the “Golden Key”. There was no hatred. Simply, Alexei Nikolaevich, being a cheerful, warm, explosive person, did not understand the coldness of the block. But he certainly understood his poetry. Even if he addresses the diaries of Blok himself, to the diaries of Alexei Nikolaevich - he was a guest of Blok, read his poetry, but she was not his. As someone loves Dostoevsky, and someone Leo Tolstoy. There was no hatred, as such, there was only petty hooliganism, if we talk about the "Yegor Abosov" and the literary part of the "sisters". He played - like with dolls, as with puppets. Perhaps, nevertheless, referring to the collective image, which Alexei Nikolaevich himself spoke repeatedly when he was accused of dislike of Alexander Blok. Of course, he revered him as a poet, and it cannot even be said that he was friendly, but was accepted in the Blok’s house and spoke very positively of him. Apparently, he simply did not understand him as a person. He seemed to him a very cold and detached person.
Ivan Tolstoy: I would spread what you said not only to the Blok, but also to many characters in the Silver Age. In general, maybe to Petersburg. There was the deepest difference in the nature of the psyche of Alexei Tolstoy and the people of the Silver Age. As I understand him as a writer, Alexei Nikolaevich, as I understand, was alien to modernism as a whole. He was alien to mysticism, idealistic thinking, all kinds - as he called it - "fog in literature." He was a writer, of course, a strong and powerful realistic fold. No wonder Fedor Sollogub uttered about him words that someone evaluates as insulting, and I think - as words that fall to the point, in the top ten; He said that "Alyosha Tolstoy’s belly is talented," and these are even rude words, but they are completely accurate. This characterizes the writer of the realistic direction. All Petersburg was alien to Alexei Tolstoy; He fled from him. You say that he was accepted in the Blok’s house. We once accept; For some time - yes. But Blok wrote in his notebook that his name is to read the next play of Tolstoy - “I won’t go,” Blok writes. This is not by chance, and, of course, Tolstoy then made a lot of him in some characters.
Let's listen.
