Our guest is Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the Yabloko party.
Grigory Alekseevich, two manifestations of mass in Moscow in one week, what does this mean?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
This means that the pressure on the NTV, the pressure on the freedom of statements, the freedom of information hit people truly, hit the living.
Savik Shuster:
Questions to Grigory Yavlinsky will be asked by the correspondent in Moscow by the American magazine Time Paul Kuindzhaj, the correspondent in Moscow of the Danish newspaper Politicals, Pens Dalgort and the Deputy editor -in -Chief of the newspaper News Dmitry Volkov.
So let's start. Paul, since America is the only superpower with us, then let's go from you.
Paul Kuinjaj:
Although I myself am an Englishman. You are now protecting NTV, freedom of speech here. But still it seems to you that NTV in the form, as we know him, is doomed?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
I am now defending the right of journalists to tell Russia about events with Kursk, the right of journalists to tell Russia about the burial of nuclear waste, the right of journalists to talk about the war in Chechnya, the right of journalists investigate the explosions that were in Moscow and did not take place in Ryazan. I am defending the right of journalists to be a creative team.
There will no longer be the NTV that was before. The events of the last week have led to the fact that the team, the creative team of NTV journalists is changing. Their attitude to life is changing, their view of politics in Russia changes. In this sense - yes, there will be no such NTV as before, there will be another NTV.
But now we are not talking about a television company, about AO NTV, we are talking about fundamental things, which also include, for example, that people of creative professions have the right to choose who they want to work with, who they are ready to shake their hands and who are not, and public opinion in Russia also has the right to choose who they want to communicate with, and with whom they do not want.
If you ask me about the financial side of the matter, then this is just another question, it has nothing to do with everything that we protect.
Paul Kuinjaj:
Well, is this the right you are talking about now, will this right remain with people here under President Putin?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
If we now show that we are ready to seriously defend this right, then maybe it will remain. And if now everyone will break and take this right, then it will not be.
Savik Shuster:
Per Dalgort, the newspaper "Political", please.
Per Dalgort: Reading newspapers Russian and if you look at television, it seems to me that there is some kind of polyphony that was not there before. How do you think there is no freedom of speech in Russia?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
We always had freedom of speech. We had problems with freedom after you say this word. In this sense, little has changed. We now have freedom of speech in the sense that you can write incriminating evidence, you can write materials that are recorded from your telephone conversations, you can lie about you anything, you can pour mud on you, you can pour mud on the most respected and disrespectable people. You can interfere in your personal life, you can simply come up with some fables and come up with some intrigues. In this sense, freedom, indeed, has grown immeasurably compared to what was before.
But after Yeltsin’s departure, freedom to assess the situation in the country on the main television channels, of course, changed. Our first and second channel show the same thing, they show what is recommended from the Kremlin. Systematically express their thoughts to their voters even politicians who have millions of people who voted for them on national channels are completely impossible.
Manipulation is absolutely frank. Even the simplest quote that you give in three minutes will be transferred to it, they will cut off what is not necessary, then they will glue, cross and formulate it on this channel as profitable for the editorial policy of this channel at every moment.
In this sense, it is not just freedom to shout something, but freedom of speech as a systematic expression of views, how, using your term, polyphony of views, as a multiplicity of positions, as democracy, pluralism, freedom of speech as an expression in the political sense of freedom of conscience, freedom of belief, in Russia today, of course, is not.
Per Dalgort: I had to go with one taxi driver in Moscow yesterday, and he told me such a thing: “Here I have a stick, it is green. RTR, ORT says:“ No, it is red, ”and NTV says:“ No, she is yellow. ”And those and others lie,” he said so. He had in mind that NTV is also lying, NTV also draws only one political line, namely, “apple”.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Well, about the "apple" political line is a very great exaggeration. But if the “apple” political line is to tell the truth and not to deviate from values and principles even when it is very difficult and difficult, then what, we are happy. Although in this sense we are not very satisfied with NTV, because far from always in its history, NTV, or far from always and now it expresses the point of view of this kind. However, be that as it may, but NTV was the only television company that allowed us to say what we consider necessary. Like Zyuganov, like Zhirinovsky, like all other politicians of Russia. This is a fact.
They had different times. I do not always share their point of view, they now suffer very much because of this. But, nevertheless, it was the only tribune where we can express any point of view.
Savik Shuster:
Why are we talking in the past tense?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Well, this is how it is now, but we just seem to summarize the results regarding NTV. But, taking advantage of your example regarding a taxi driver who called you colors, and his wand is green. So, the green color can only be obtained by the overlap of all the colors that he called, on top of each other, so the green color turns out.
In fact, the dispute about the independence of the press, about its absolute objectivity - the dispute is somewhat scholastic, as I understand it. Of course, you know more, you yourself are editors or journalists of the publications known in the world, and you can know better whether you allow you to print everything you want, or do not allow what role the owner of your magazines and newspapers plays, what the editor -in -chief says to you, whether you can write an article with the common line of your magazine.
But freedom is ensured that in addition to the magazine Time, there is also the Newsuik magazine, which can also write about the same thing, albeit not quite the truth, but from a different point of view. And there is "Forbes" who will write about the same, from the third point of view. And there is Forin Amfer, which is a completely different magazine, and from a fourth point of view will write, well, and so on, and so on. And so we, as a result, the reader, if he is really interested in getting an idea of what is happening, he gets a point of view.
So. Today, we have all the channels of nationwide, except for NTV, express one point of view. Here we are fighting for the second one. And how much this is all corresponding to reality, well, this is generally a question on another topic.
Savik Shuster:
Dmitry, please.
Dmitry Volkov:
In 1996, for example, you were a presidential candidate and lost. They lost to Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin, whom NTV, according to a very common in Russia and the West, supported disproportionate attention and grace, we can say. I must say that at that time ORT, RTR, and NTV adhered to the very single point of view that you have been talking about with such sadness now. So where is we have a guarantee that, having defended NTV now, we will not get a well -consolidated position of the media again in the situation?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
There is no such guarantee.
Dmitry Volkov:
And why are we fighting then? Where is the very principle, “let one say one, while others say the other, and nothing of this will be true, but the truth will be in the middle”? They can all start saying the same thing at any time.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
In 1996, NTV did not disproportionately supported Yeltsin, but simply officially entered his headquarters, that is, it was the television company of the headquarters of Boris Yeltsin, by the way, not Yabloko. And in 1999, NTV supported Kiriyenko, in 1999 NTV supported Luzhkov, in 1999 NTV supported Chubais, in 1999 NTV supported Nemtsov, in 1999 NTV also supported us, but at the same time, Primakov, moreover,, moreover, with them with all.
And in 2000, NTV did not support anyone. She did not support Putin, but she also did not support me in a special way, it is so easy to certify.
There are no guarantees in the Russian Federation for any reason. But this, however, does not mean that you should not defend what is important to you and expensive at the moment. I think that the events that are taking place around NTV today answered this in the very first question, in many ways change NTV itself, too, I hope, at least for this. I hope that the next time they enter some Pupkin to the headquarters, how they entered Yeltsin (well, in the next election), they will well think whether they have the right to betray the support they have today. And today they have this support to a large extent, to some extent, also with an advance that they will not do this anymore.
And, by the way, they suddenly turned out to be the only media that I have known to me, in which the owner of the media and the journalists themselves publicly, in the biggest gatherings, indicate that they were mistaken in 1996. Show me at least one publication, Russian or Western, which will write today that it was mistaken when, with all his might, having repulsed his palms, Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin clapped him. And when all the leaders of all Western countries came to Moscow for a large seven only in order to persuade the Russian voter to vote for Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin. It seems to me that not a single newspaper, not a single magazine, not a single media, not a single politician has never said anything about it anywhere.
There is a hope that, in particular, the NTV team, those people who will remain on NTV if NTV stands if it is preserved, it will be a very good lesson for them. We are growing, we only create a new life and democracy and other rules here.
Savik Shuster:
Paul Kuinjaj.
Paul Kuinjaj:
NTV will still remain, as you think, or not?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
I don't know. I have a very great concern about this.
Paul Kuinjaj:
What forces can be influenced by Putin so that he changes his course, or is it even more impossible?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
I think that in terms of NTV the possibilities are not large.
Paul Kuinjaj:
Well, as for the freedom of the media?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Well, here is not value for him, and that’s all. And, in addition, there are deep reasons. The fact is that, say, for Yeltsin the freedom of the media was indifferent. Because he won as the President of Russia, he won contrary to all visible and invisible media, well, in 1991, which were only here, to all the Soviet media. Therefore, he learned that it makes no difference to him what these media say there, what they write about him. He was so completely great and said that "where you will all go, even the media, at least democrats, at least everything." And all. He was completely different.
As for the current president, he won only thanks to the media, so the media for him in this sense is especially expensive. It is not at all indifferent to him that the media is written about him and what they say. Therefore, he is dealing with them, builds them so that they serve him. How soon he will understand that the media can truly strengthen power only if they all talk about what is really happening, I can’t say. Don't know.
Paul Kuinjaj:
And what are your personal relations with the president?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Until recently, relations have been even, ordinary, official. When the president considers it necessary, possible, I have the opportunity to meet and discuss different problems with him, to make various proposals. Well, here, in fact, is all the relationship.
Paul Kuinjaj:
You said until recently. Something happened or what?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
I do not know what will happen after the last two weeks, when we took such a tough and intelligible position on the events that occurred in the country. We already have a number of questions on which our points of view, on large issues, are significantly diverging. These are events in the death of Kursk, these are the development of events in Chechnya and the whole operation in Chechnya. This is the president’s decision on Soviet symbolism, which we do not accept. And finally, this is a position on the anthem, sorry. Finally, this is a position on NTV.
Paul Kuinjaj:
Is this a watershed for you?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
We have nothing to share. We clearly and clearly declare our position regarding the fact that for us the course to create a corporate state in Russia is unacceptable. And today in Russia, great efforts are made by the President to ensure that the trends of a corporate, police, bureaucratic state are more and more manifested.
A corporate state is a state that does not destroy democratic institutions, but adapts them to itself. This is when the Union of Journalists do not like it, you can create a media union - and adapt. This is when such parties do not like, you can create "unity" - and adapt. This is when NTV does not like it, you can nationalize it through Gazprom - and adapt it. This is when this or that politician does not like it, it can either be bought or expelled, and thus - also adapted.
This is a way when everything can be adapted. The court can be adapted, everything, but leave all the mannequins on the window, leave all the stuffed animals. Well, in order to, say, Western leaders would be more comfortable to come to Russia to drink beer, or meet the holidays, or do something else here, so that it does not irritate them. And all these straw stuffed animals in the window will stick out. One will write "Freedom of the Press", on the other it will be written "Democracy", on the third there is something else there.
In this regard, the "Yabloko" categorically opposes, and we are in the systemic opposition to this course. But we are ready to continue the dialogue with the president. If the president finds it possible to talk to us, we are ready to respond to this dialogue. This is a dialogue of equal people. We are ready on behalf of millions of our voters to offer solutions to the most difficult problems of the country. We are ready to express our point of view in the eyes at our meetings. We are ready to help and work. But we, in a systemic, implacable, I would say, opposition to the course for the construction of a corporate, police, bureaucratic state in Russia.
Savik Shuster:
Per, please.
Per Dalgort:
Rumor has it that you are offered a place in the government. Would you go to such a government with such an "evil Chekist president"?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
And I do not discuss rumors. That's when you are authorized by the president, then we will talk about it.
Savik Shuster:
Dmitry Volkov.
Dmitry Volkov:
Do not you think that you should still discuss at least to some extent an economic component of the issue? We all remember the conflict, for example, at the Vyborg Pulp and Light Plant. Well, of course, it is strange to compare, on the one hand, television and cellulose, right? and paper. And on the other hand, because we are ... and there are, in fact, there are a huge number of such conflicts in Russia, and in addition, these conflicts are nothing new in the West. Here is the Times newspaper, for example, at one time was absorbed in a hostile way by Mr. Murdok. Disaster did not happen, right?
What distinguishes, in your opinion, the situation around NTV from the situation of numerous cases of a different kind?
Grigory Yavlinsky:
And what, in fact, is practice? This is that "Bank of the New York" gave out two power of attorney to vote, yes, with the same shares, is this, or something, practice?
Dmitry Volkov:
There is a legal dispute.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
There is no legal dispute. A new department came, which appeared because, for example, one of the companies issued two power of attorney for voting. Is this not a sufficient basis here to appeal to such a powerful structure as some Cheremushkinsky court, so that there, in court, it was decided, like two reviews of the same four percent given to different people?
I’m not struggling now for whether to recognize or not recognize the decision of the shareholders, and I am fighting for it to be considered in court, honestly and objectively. It seems to me that the meeting of April 3 is not legitimate, and I protect the right of NTV to appeal this issue in court, they are deprived, today, such a right.
And if the court decides that everything was correct and legal and all the shares on the Gazprom side, - well, then, then you are right, then each of the journalists will decide whether he is ready to work with this new owner or is not ready, and that’s all. This will be a very personal, private decision, and the company will transfer to the hands of new owners. But this will happen nevertheless after the court to establish this, taking into account many ambiguities and misunderstanding that arises in connection with the meeting on April 3.
It is not clear what I said now, it is not clear that why nineteen percent earned before July 1, although the money had to be returned only in the month of July. It is also not clear whether there was a sufficient quorum at this meeting. There are a lot of obscure questions.
Until now, a lawsuit on this issue has not been adopted in any court of the city of Moscow. This is the problem. And I think that in any country in the world it would cause very significant issues. Actually, this is all that NTV achieves.
But there is a second component. And the second component is as follows. The media business has its own characteristics.
And the last.
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
That's the problem.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Yes.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Savik Shuster:
Dmitry.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
It is quite possible.
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
Yes.
Savik Shuster:
Grigory Yavlinsky:
I don't know.
Grigory Yavlinsky:

Grigory Yavlinsky:
Savik Shuster:
And tell me, please.
Grigory Yavlinsky:
