Vladimir Baburin:
Our guest today is the Belarusian writer, laureate of the Triumph Prize Vasil Bykov.
Vasil Vladimirovich, how do you assess the prospects of the Russian-Belarusian Union?
Vasil Bykov:
Belarus is an authoritarian country. How can they unite? In addition - the economy. The economy of Belarus is entirely socialist, all enterprises belong to the state there. Unless the Russian financial and industrial groups, in the event of integration, will take possession of the former these Soviet enterprises, this is quite possible.
Therefore, my (and not only mine) attitude to this is negative. I believe that the relationship between Belarus and Russia - the closest, most friendly, the most, so to speak, economically mutually beneficial - can be built on other foundations, completely different from how it is done now.
Vladimir Baburin:
Our guest today is a writer, Vasil Bykov. Questions will be asked by Elena Dyakova, "New Gazeta", and my colleague Ilya Dadashidze. The program is conducted by Vladimir Baburin.
And I will begin, as always, with a brief biography of our guest today.
Vasil Bykov was born in 1924 in a peasant family near Polotsk. He studied at an art school in Vitebsk, founded by Mark Shagal.
A participant in the Great Patriotic War, the military service completed in 1955 by Major Artiller.
The first book is satirical stories - "Conde by the horse." In the early sixties - the first stories and novels on a military theme: "Third Rocket", "The Dead NOT IS PASS", "Attack immediately." Vasil Bykov’s books “Kruglyansky Bridge”, “Sotnikov”, “Bede sign” and “Wolf Yama” aroused greatest reader interest.
For the last book about Chernobyl, Vasil Bykov was awarded the Triumph Prize. Vasil Bykov is also a laureate of the Lenin and State Prizes and Hero of Socialist Labor. And the Triumph Prize Vasil Bykov was awarded last Sunday, and it was on this occasion that Vasil Bykov today in the Moscow Studio Radio Liberty.
Vasil Vladimirovich, you are awarded many awards. And the highest state awards of the Soviet Union, and have now received the most prestigious prize in the field of culture, to which, nevertheless, the cultural figures have a double attitude, due to the fact that one of the founders of this award is Boris Berezovsky. Do you have any special attitude to this prize?
Vasil Bykov:
I have no particular relation to this award. For the reason that I believe that in the position in which our culture is now - not only literature, but the literature, perhaps, is, especially, and it is precisely - realistic literature, socially engaged .... It cannot exist, not only develop, but also to exist without outside help, some sponsorship.
Because the state, as you know, was not able to support literature. On the one hand, this may be good, because God forbid the support that literature experienced during the years of Soviet power. But at the same time, at this turning point, while the collapse of economic, literature at the expense of its own resources also cannot survive.
Therefore - what remains to writers who do not write detectives. Or - who are still trying to stay in the positions of realism, especially - humanism, which are not post -modders? What remains for them, besides how to find some extraneous funds and exist and create on them?
Vladimir Baburin:
Elena Dyakova, "New Gazeta".
Elena Dyakova:
"Wolf Yama". Its name is echoing with the name of your long -standing story - "Wolf Pack". And that story is a wonderful thing about how the partisan endures the child, sacrificing everyone, in terrible conditions. And your prose is so beautiful, so detailed that all the suffering of a person in the war, in each bump, in every snowy swamp that he overcomes, is especially acute.
The partisan takes out the baby, they part, and after thirty years the old hero is waiting for this grown child at his house on a bench, and at the same time there is absolutely no doubt that this child, who was taken out of hell, has grown up a normal, decent person, and they will meet like people. This ends the story.
And a powerful sensation ... meaning, and goal -setting of life, and suffering suffered by people, is very strong there.
In the "Wolf Pit" - on the contrary. It seems that the random, crazy adhesion of our current circumstances drives people to the Chernobyl zone and reduces their existence to complete vague. Your young hero, a soldier who fled from the unit, vaguely recalls the book “The Struggle for Fire” read in childhood, and thinks: “So we came to the same concerns,” - thinking where to get matches.
Is this comparison by chance, I built, or does it answer your thoughts today?
Vasil Bykov:
The events of recent years, especially the Chernobyl disaster, showed that this is the crazy development of our civilization, many technogenic and other factors, under certain political conditions, can lead, so to speak, to the initial human existence, namely, to what Roni Sr. once wrote in the “struggle for fire”.
Well, this, of course, is a detail. And she, so to speak,, so to speak, I think, does not take, but, at least - reminds. And what is happening around Chernobyl and in Chernobyl itself - in general, is fraught with many allusions in this regard.
Vladimir Baburin:
Ilya Dadashidze.
Ilya Dadashidze:
You started as a satirist and released the book “The Groove of the horse”, it was your first book, and suddenly - from the satire moved to military topics. What was caused by?
Vasil Bykov:
We must keep in mind the circumstances that developed in the country after the twentieth and twenty -second congress, when a certain - in ideology, in life, in art - a thaw came. And when it became possible to delve into, so to speak, and submit our Soviet ulcers for display. Which did not only do, but many others. That is - it seemed to us that the most burning, the most necessary, topical is a satire.
But very soon the thaw was crushed, frozen. And after that I tried to write a few things on the topics of reality, but it turned out that they were all, objects of such a sense, are impassable. And military stories (at least that I wrote) and then - the story, they passed. This is in all Soviet literature. Remember, with the advent of the first military novels of Baklanov and Bondarev, a lieutenant prose appeared. We also recalled the traditions of Viktor Nekrasov, well, partly - some more military writers, and this became possible.
And so, in this way, I switched to a military theme. Not at all because the war, or the army so fascinated me, I had hated it all my life - both. But I saw there the opportunity, so to speak, of some realization of some of my ideas, including mainly, and mainly denying ideas.
Vladimir Baburin:
Vasil Vladimirovich, in Russia (I do not mean the boundaries of the current Russian Federation, but - the former Soviet Union, the Russian Empire, as you like) the Writer’s word always had a special meaning. It was probably the only country in the world where poets could collect stadiums.
A week ago, this studio was a wonderful poet Yuri Ryashentsev. He said that when the approaches to the stadium in which the poet will perform is guarded by the horse police, it is abnormal, this is an abnormal attitude to the word, because people expect from the writer, from the poet - something that he can never hear on the radio, nor on television, or read in the newspaper. And Yuri Ryashentsev considered this abnormal. Nevertheless, it was.
Now the situation has changed dramatically. Solzhenitsyn says - they don’t listen, says Viktor Astafyev - they don’t listen. You generally live in a quiet Helsinki. Do you feel unclaimed now, and do you have the need to speak out, and what do you want to say, then?
Vasil Bykov:
When they do not listen, this is not a tragedy. Worse when they listen to the wrong ones. But in this part, I would say, nothing changes with us. Those organs that are "attached" to literature, they always listen.
Well, I don't know how now in Russia. I have not been here for a long time. And for us, for example, in Belarus, this continues, I don’t know from which ... probably from the days, so to speak - from the October Revolution.
Of course, there can be a double attitude to this fact. Somewhere in the early sixties, a magnificent John Steinbek came to Moscow, he met with Moscow young writers, and as I remember since then, he said that “they are planting for your free word, they give a deadline - this is fine, it speaks about the price of this word. In the West, for example, it does not matter. Whatever you say, it will all be all in good place.”
So, we have come to such a state now when the writer’s word is in an even word nothing. The attitude towards this can be decided in the spirit of Camus. Remember, his "plague", this magnificent thing, which Twardowski once called "the gospel of the twentieth century." Maybe Tolstoy is the same, here is his well -known saying: "Do what it should, and there - let it be, what will happen."
Therefore, I think that you should not dramatize this situation. The writer just has to do his job, and write as he considers necessary. And the reaction - spectators, superiors, there KGB, I don’t know, so to speak, who is not his business, it does not depend on him.
Vladimir Baburin:
And still, where to write: in Moscow, in Minsk, in Helsinki, in Vermont?
Vasil Bykov:
No, not anyway. Because, for example, I cannot write in Minsk. Firstly, I have a cold apartment. I there with my patients with lungs, so to speak, bend very quickly, because in Minsk a maximum temperature was introduced by the president’s decree - twelve degrees. Apartment temperature. On the rise, so to speak, above - there is no money. The state is at such a "high" level of development that it cannot, so to speak, warm its cities.
In Finland, I lived a year and a half. I wrote there, I think, a lot. At least I wrote this story a small and two more books there. I worked there daily, nothing distracted me there, the conditions were wonderful. A small warm apartment, a cozy loggia ... Well, in my view - above the bar, above the beer bar. It was an apartment on the second floor, on the ground floor - a beer bar.
But do not smile - there the Finns drink quietly and silently, so they did not interfere with my matrier family, which they spent, so to speak, on Sundays behind beer circles, did not bother me at all. On the contrary, this is very good. I felt there in the human team, if I may say so.
Therefore, it doesn’t care where to write. But the writer does not need much. It is necessary - a quiet corner and a blank sheet of paper, nothing more.
Vladimir Baburin:
That is - there are no political motives for your departure, only now ....
Vasil Bykov:
Well, there are, of course, political motives, and there are enough of them. I would not want to talk about them, because a very large bunch of these motives to turn them over. But it is these political motives.
Vladimir Baburin:
Elena Dyakova, "New Gazeta"
Elena Dyakova:
Well, if you allow you, twelve degrees of heat in the house is already a political motive, and powerful, in its own way. Vasil Vladimirovich, however, yesterday at the presentation of the Triumph at the Bolshoi Theater said that before the New Year you returned to Minsk.
Vasil Bykov:
Yes, returned.
Elena Dyakova:
Why, if possible?
Vasil Bykov:
Elementary: my Finnish visa is over.
Elena Dyakova:
For a long time?
Vasil Bykov:
For a long time I returned, I don't know. If I still have any other possibility of any more acceptable and tolerant, then I, of course, will leave.
Elena Dyakova:
Your Russian publications in 1999 are a "banner" and "friendship of peoples." Do you have books in Belarus?
Vasil Bykov:
Something happened. The book, which was thrown out of the State Presidential Publishing House, was not published, although it was already scored, but it was picked up by one small private publishing house, which announced a subscription, a folk subscription for my short story, it is called the “Wall”, and last year it was published. A small circulation, of course, is eight hundred copies.
The book of journalism has published in the same small publishing house, there are articles of recent years. Well, that's all. True, sometimes my former, Soviet still novels are reprinted there. It goes without saying that this almost does not bring income. In general, now it’s ridiculous to talk about writing income.
Vladimir Baburin:
Before Ilya Dadashidze will ask your question, you, just in addition .... You are probably known to the assessment, which is a long time ago, ten years ago, the great Russian writer Venedikt Erofeev gave you, I will simply remind the audience. He said: “I evaluate people, how much I would pour to whom,” and called you the first. “Here is Vasil Bykov - a glass with a hill.”
Here Venedikt Erofeev understood. And President Lukashenko does not understand what is the writer Vasil Bykov? After all, even more so - you are not engaged in political activities. You do not write any anti -Lukashenko articles, performances. Here - does not understand?
Vasil Bykov:
He does not need bulls. He has a cohesive, powerful cohort of his own personal writers who write his biographies. They write about him, so to speak, and write his life, and glorify the regime, and this is enough for him. And he does not accept everything else.
Vladimir Baburin:
Ilya Dadashidze.
Ilya Dadashidze:
The news of the assignment of the Triumph Award came to you just on the day when an agreement was signed between Belarus and Russia. In my understanding, they seem to be connected with each other, because the news came literally with an interval per hour.
Please tell me how you reacted to the signing of this contract?
Vasil Bykov:
I reacted to this agreement, to sign it, as well as to all previous manipulations about the contract, negatively. Because I still believe that Belarus as a state, as a long-standing member and even the founder of the United Nations, has the right to its own sovereign existence. Here. And what Lukashenko does and his regime is aimed at eliminating, at the full elimination of, so to speak, of this sovereignty. And if only this was the meaning of this action. But, in addition, he, under this pretext, eliminates national culture, national literature, and national language.
As a civilized person can be treated, not necessarily a Belarusian, in general, at least a strict from some, so to speak, southern states of America, when it disappears from the map of Europe. Not Africa, so to speak, but an independent state disappears from the map of Europe?
Well, when Chechnya disappears, we were convinced that this is right, so to speak. But Belarus is not Chechnya, but it should also disappear. How can I relate to this? Moreover, if I am still a Belarusian writer and is associated with the Belarusian culture, and with Belarus is connected by the origin?
And then, one must keep in mind the fact, or the circumstance that many politicians do not notice for some reason. So far there is no association, there is no integration. There are manipulations, there is an imitation. A colossal imitation occurs, this integration, from which certain political dividends are extracted. How many documents have already been signed? How many meetings were there, how many foods were drunk and broken? And how many kisses were there at the highest level?
This did not lead to any results. Why? Because, in general, it is impossible economically impossible. Belarus and Russia are completely different worlds. At a time when Russia is nevertheless-well, even nominally, if not quite a democratic state, it seems to be, makes some attempts in this direction ....
Vladimir Baburin:
Perhaps there are two polar points of view, as this association can occur. The one who performs (here, in Russia, in Moscow) for the revival of the Russian Empire sees the path that is probably similar to German. It was not the unification of Western and Eastern Germany, but East Germany was annexed and dissolved in Western Germany. And the country turned out to be the same name that West Germany wore - the Federal Republic of Germany.
There are options that it will be a certain confederation. But all this is somehow very poorly visible. And either this, indeed, can be a single unitary state, and then you are probably right - the Russian financial and industrial groups will privatize Belarusian enterprises and create such a single space. That is, not the states of Russia and Belarus will join, but simply Minsk, Brest and several other areas of Belarus will join the Russian Federation.
You, as a Belarusian writer,, as I understand it, are playing for another path? Or are you generally against categorically any form of union, whether it is a confederation, a unitary state, and so on, and so on?
Vasil Bykov:
No, why? There is a European path of associations. As we know, there is a European Union, where on some principles there has been a union recently. I think this is the most reasonable association. That is, an association that does not damage any of the parties, and which, so to speak, brings certain benefits. This is a reasonable, democratic, modern, so to speak, form of unification.
But this is not at all in mind here. Although we, although some steps are being taken, and some documents are concluded, some contracts, but, in general, neither the goal nor a specific form of this action is formulated.
Why is this being done? I think - then, so that later the main integrators remain free hands, the freedom of action remains. When the main documents will be signed, they could dispose of them as you like. Well, according to Hitlerovsky, so to speak, the recipe.
Vladimir Baburin:
Elena Dyakova:
Is it so? What do you feel about it?
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Do you agree with such an assessment?
Vladimir Baburin:
This is amazing.
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Ilya Dadashidze:
What happened?
Ilya Dadashidze:
Vladimir Baburin:
Elena Dyakova:
Elena Dyakova:
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Ilya Dadashidze:
It's not about money.
Vladimir Baburin:
Vladimir Baburin:
Thank you. This was the last question.
Elena Dyakova:
