Presenter: Victor Shenderovich
Victor Shenderovich: Today we meet with Professor Afanasyev. This meeting takes place on the eve of Victory Day. That is a wonderful case when the surname does not need to transfer titles. Nevertheless, several main "crystallization points" by which you were remembered. I think that at first it was a phrase about the "aggressive-listening majority." Then the eye identified you from a number of people's deputies of that no worse in the history of Russia, I must say, not at all the worst congress. Perhaps this was the last congress when you could see in large numbers decent, smart, intelligent faces in the hall. Then it was somehow rapidly washed. It washed you too. Let's start with this. Do not regret that it was washed, that you are not participating, in fact, and have no opportunity to change anything in the legal plan?
Yuri Afanasyev: Of course, it’s not at all sorry. On the contrary, the farther the time is, the more I am convinced that, after all, I, it turns out, can sometimes make the right decision. The fact is that I was already completely convinced that I was for political activity, for such as I imagined it, I am simply not adapted. I have no absolutely necessary qualities and skills for this. I realized this very clearly and never thought of myself even in the days when, it would seem, fate threw me to the forefront with Yeltsin, Sakharov, Popov and so on, I was convinced that I know my place. That is, I remain the rector of the university.
Viktor Shenderovich: That is, this very famous principle that everyone should achieve the degree of their incompetence has slipped. In connection with that first congress and day, on the eve of which we are talking, remember, at the first or second congress, you will correct me, actively discussed - and then demanded that the Baltic States, the Baltic -Soviet delegation demanded that Molotov -Ribbentrop assess. Spears broke around this. And recently, at a meeting with Slovak journalists, our president explicitly said that this agreement was necessary so that the Soviet Union could avoid war, for security purposes. In general, they did the right thing that they signed an agreement with the Ribbentrop. At that congress there were also people who said that they did the right thing, and they were in the majority. But still there was a feeling that the castle of this dragon was already collapsing and falling completely, and we are present at the last agony. It turns out nothing of the kind. It turns out that it can pass 15 years - and as if nothing had happened. They did the right thing that they signed. Stalin won the war. And we hear all this. And already monuments. Your view of the historian?
Yuri Afanasyev: You know, in general, the event was really amazing, I mean the first congress. And at this first congress of people's deputies, a commission was formed on the assessment of the Pact Ribbentrop-Molotov. It was headed by Alexander Nikolaevich Yakovlev. She was quite representative. There were historians, and politicians, and from the Union republics, including from the Baltic countries, and the military. We worked for a very long time, we examined a rather large pile of documents. I worked in this commission, played a noticeable role in the sense that I believed that this, in fact, was mine not just a deputy duty, but also a civil duty. In the end, I am a historian, I survived and worked out the whole thing and so on. And, in the end, Alexander Nikolaevich made a report, this report was approved and the congress voted. The congress voted to condemn the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact and secret protocols to him, firstly, as an immoral act. That is, Stalin went to negotiations, the conclusion of secret agreements with Hitler, with this personification of all the abominations that fell upon our land. In addition, the condemnation was subject to - and this was done - this is such a section of the peoples into the zones and spheres of influence. And essentially the boundaries of the Soviet zone of influence and the German zone of influence were drawn. And it was also blasphemous. But for me, frankly, it was unexpected to vote such a unanimous vote for the adoption of this condemnation. The fact is that, I think, I was not very mistaken when I called this congress of the aggressive-listening majority present on it. The mood there was by no means in favor of the ideals of democracy.
Viktor Shenderovich: Even those who were on the opposite side of the barricades felt dynamics.
Yuri Afanasyev: Not that dynamics, but a certain atmosphere of general democracy. And then this congress was the result of such a gust, the will of unanimity, the desire to be together.
Viktor Shenderovich: Look, it seems to me that the war and the results of the war - and these days is especially important, although it is bitter to talk about it - they are such an assessment of everything that was connected with the war. Still remain a litmus piece of paper, according to which a person and attitude to some values are determined. Today we are in the 15th year of the life of democratic Russia. The official position of our state: Molotov -Ribbentrop Pact - yes, we do not recognize the occupation of the Baltic states. And this is our official position. At the same time, we want to be in a big eight, while we want us to be considered not for those, but for these. This is the ambiguous position of Russia, it is quite familiar, oddly enough, from the Chaadaev times.
Yuri Afanasyev: Not just quite familiar, but as if there is no other. As a matter of fact, our whole story is woven from such an essence of the Russian. It is almost always difficult to recognize, but even somehow explain. This essence of its imperial. In essence, with the Tatar-Mongol time, the strategic attitude, the purpose of the Russian leadership, the tsarist leadership was aggression, annexation, conquest, and retention. Another, no matter how much you strain, period, segment of time, goal - you will not meet in our history. And it was constantly. And she was constant, as it seems to me, due to that, including that nevertheless Rus' did not get rid of, did not free herself from the Mongol-Tatar invasion, she inherited him.
Viktor Shenderovich: This is a terrible formulation, but fair.
Yuri Afanasyev: She inherited him with all his orders. And as a certain goal, this way of life prescribed the external expansion to the Mongol-Tatars, the conquest of the new, the retention of the new, the conquest of the conquered. It was a way of life. And he gradually for almost three hundred years has become the norm of life for Moscow princes. The Moscow princes achieved the advantage of Moscow precisely thanks to the conquests of other principalities of Russians with the help of Mongol-Tatar. Not only a label for a great reign was given. A certain provision was placed under the label on the great reign. You can call the army at any time, and you will always be in alliance with someone. And this was not just a fingerprint on our history, but these sources, this cradle to some extent to our essence. It seemed to all subsequent generations of the rulers that the more we would conquer and attach, the more prosperity would live.
Viktor Shenderovich: Someone considered it from historians that in some period, rather long, under Alexander III, Russia expanded at a speed of 140 kilometers a day. This expansion speed. It is completely clear that it is impossible to master this. The phrase that Russia is like gypsies: it’s easier to move to a new place than to master the old. There were jerks towards Europe and jerks are quite intelligible and long attempts. Indeed, somehow from the Tatar-Mongolian Russian Moscow principality, somehow this principality gave an amazing science, amazing literature, and a striking culture. How?
Yuri Afanasyev: There is no contradiction. Indeed, the people are not just large, but the people are great. And there were enough not just smart people among our people, but truly brilliant people. And when the period of colossal breakdown came, when we turned into an industrial or industrial society from the traditionalist society, it was just the 19th century in this sense, a hinge in this sense, this break was given by such a stormy surge in culture, and it gave rise to the Golden Age. Because after all, all our great ones, they saw Europe, and they were horrified from what surrounds them in Russia.
Viktor Shenderovich: In this sense, today, oddly enough, can give grounds for historical optimism. Because not some thousands of nobles saw Europe, as in 1815, but a significant number of millions of Russians in Europe, it saw, has the opportunity to compare, there is Internet, television. Do you see any optimistic prospects in this?
Yuri Afanasyev: On the contrary, unfortunately. The fact is that then the vision of Europe and the vision of differences between Russian conditions and European ones, it caused thoughts, as a rule, bright. And what are we? Can't we make it so that we live like that? The Decembrists were the first to rush in this sense. Chaadaev from the same generation, Pushkin is the same.
Victor Shenderovich: Although he was not allowed to Europe.
Yuri Afanasyev: He was not allowed, but he lived, he saw all this. Karamzin ... a whole galaxy of wonderful, brilliant Russian people began to compare and from this comparison made a conclusion such as Chaadaev, for example, that Russia got lost in this world and everything wanders in a circle instead of going forward. Such gloomy several visions. But at the same time, there were quite bright thoughts. And they, it seems to me, were the source of this great Russian culture. That is, as it were, the difference between what was in life and ideas about what could be, gave rise, oddly enough, this great literature. There is no normal life, so at least we will write. Here, look how it can be. And now it seems to me completely different. Because this is the tension that I spoke about, an unrealizable strategic goal in the form of Moscow -Through Through the Rome, the conquest of everything, Orthodoxy, which dominates the whole Christian world, and so on, all human resources, natural resources and exhausted them. As soon as these resources ended, exhausted, some period, relatively speaking, came up. And then again they took up the next war, preparations for wars and so on. But, nevertheless, this tension has always been supported. This tension was expressed in the fact that the authorities squeezed everything possible from nature and from people. And the contradictions between the global, huge, world scale with strategic expansionist attitudes and real opportunities in the form of a skinny population and, in general, not so rich nature in Russia, if you take everything together - the winter, climate, nature, soil, and so on, created a low level of quality of life constantly. And on this contradiction between the desire for a large and the impossibility of achieving it, a second contradiction arose: between power and society. That is, voltage and struggle formed between them.
Victor Shenderovich: Already a hundred years ago it was formulated. More than a hundred years ago, Chekhov said: "Russia is a state country." The feeling of a country where power has nothing to do with society. A country that exists not for people, in fact, but for some ideas, for the realization of goals. And from this we cannot get out. And the way we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Victory is, of course, a monstrous and brilliant illustration of the point where we are. Because, according to my emotional feelings, what is happening - it has nothing to do, in fact, to our holiday. After all, May 9 was one of our few human holidays. We went out without bosses on the streets, we cried and gave flowers to veterans, because it was our day, it was the day of human unity, natural. Because there is no family that would not affect. This is turned into a huge, magnificent event, where we are extra. Moscow is simply numb, paralyzed, escape, who can. No one, in fact, suggested, it turns out that the people should take part in this. Even this victory, an absolutely popular victory and contrary to the authorities, won, because the authorities, in fact, unleashed a couple with Hitler at first, then - one by eight or one to six, they still did not consider how many of ours died in proportion to the enemy - they simply threw the population, blood. And these people were nothing to do with it. These remaining veterans, soldiers and their children were nothing to do with this victory. A huge PR event for the authorities.
Yuri Afanasyev: They had nothing to do with it, in fact, immediately after the war. Literally in 45, I remember this time.
Viktor Shenderovich: How much did you?
Yuri Afanasyev: I was 11 years old. But I perfectly remember this return of the unfortunate, I would say so, although they were funny and joyful in the orders. But how did their life begin? They did not work, oddly enough. For all the devastation and with all the hunger, no one thought about finding these people. In addition, a lot of cripples arrived, people came without arms, without legs, and sometimes without arms and without legs. And then immediately, in 46-47, a decision was made so that these people would not spoil the look, to send them to Valaam. They were exiled there, especially from large cities. They simply caught and the masses were referred to this islands of Valaam. There used to be a monastery, it was settled, they made additional buildings there. And in the 50s there was a huge cemetery for thousands of burials. Now this cemetery is not. And these poor, unhappy ... And you know what is no coincidence. The fact is that Victory Day was not immediately after the war-until the 60s, in my opinion, years. And this day was not even a day off, this day was not celebrated. This is until the 60s - no weekend.
Viktor Shenderovich: It was a holiday with a clear order, people went out simply:
Yuri Afanasyev: With a glass, with a glass, they drank, remembered something - and nothing more. In addition, they did not pay people for orders or medals. These cripples, sick, mutilated people did not use any benefits. And why? The fact is that during the war, when such a huge tragedy, when the tension of forces, moral, moral tension is maximum, people think about the main thing - how to survive and how to survive. And there was a massive teninization. I am very familiar with Mikhail Yakovlevich Huffter, he told me, I even wanted to write a book about it, but did not have time. This mass spontaneous teninization frightened, of course, both Stalin, and in general the whole leadership. That is, at first they began to forget about the October Revolution during the war, and therefore he already spoke in the language "brothers and sisters" and so on, Orthodoxy remembered, and then about the Russian people in order to somehow reinforce this legitimization of his reign, his power. But the tenninization was dumbfounded by power in the sense that they saw that this spirit of freedom that they gleaned inhaled wars, independence, a sense of their own unlimited possibilities, it was simply terrible. And therefore, Stalin and Power decided: the face of the table. Ah, are you winners? Ah, can you all? Here is your place.
Victor Shenderovich: Someone fought in your family?
Yuri Afanasyev: Everything except me and mother. Father went through the whole war, two uncles also went through the war, one died, one went through the war. So they fought, of course.
Viktor Shenderovich: Did you say something that you were pushed into history? Was it somehow connected with the interest in the recognition of the truth?
Yuri Afanasyev: There were no special stories. Father was imprisoned and put up uncle. They were not up to the stories, of course.
Victor Shenderovich: Were they captured?
Yuri Afanasyev: They were not in any captivity. Father was imprisoned that he found the opportunity to give three kilograms of official flour to a woman who had many children and who swelled with starvation. 46 year. As for his uncle, he always told me that he served completely correctly. Formally he was convicted of looting. He arrived and brought something from Germany. He never said that he was incorrectly convicted. He served ten years, day a day. The only thing he achieved was the return of military orders to him. And when these combat orders were returned to him, I was just horrified. In fact: the orders of the Red Star, the Order of Suvorov - there were just dozens, something incredible. How was this one person was able to win so many combat awards? He was a tankman, commanded a regiment, went through the whole war. After the war, there were such trials, rather indicative, when they began to loot in black in the post-war period, and then it was necessary to somehow stop this disgrace. And a few people, including it. Therefore, he never spared about it.
Victor Shenderovich: A fundamental position.
Yuri Afanasyev: Principal. He did not even ask for rehabilitation, he said: "No rehabilitation is like me."
Victor Shenderovich: He was a communist?
Yuri Afanasyev: He was a communist. He joined the party after ten years of imprisonment.
Viktor Shenderovich: Have you been a member of the party too?
Yuri Afanasyev: I was from the 61st to the day of the first congress. On the eve of the first congress, I announced my exit from the party.
Viktor Shenderovich: The 61st was the year when many joined the party. I know, my father told me that he even consulted with one friend-fontovik who won, party, whether to enter him. And he dissuaded him. True, he knew something by that time about history.
And that's right.
And it happened. The question is, why?
Half a century. What has changed?
Why?
