Passing regions
An experiment on a single state exam (USE) has been taking place in Russia for the second year. This is a test, which in a few years will completely replace traditional oral and written final and entrance exams. According to the reformers of the domestic education system, the USE must equalize the rights of graduates of rural and urban schools upon admission to universities. The content of the tests is the same throughout the country, the assessment system is united, the names of the examiners are encoded, which, according to the officials of the Ministry of Education, should ensure the objectivity of the exam.
The Ministry of Education expects to completely switch to the USE by 2005, but so far only 16 regions of the Russian Federation (see certificate) participate in the experiment for its conduct. In experimental areas, all graduates of secondary schools in June 2002 will pass final exams in the form of the USE and, according to its results, will be able to become students of local universities. Applicants from other regions that intend to enter the institutions located in the experiment zone will also take a single state examination. But they will pass the exam month later.
Outside the territory of the experiment, not all universities count the exam results - therefore, the owners of the USE certificate must be clarified whether they are ready to enroll them based on the results of a single exam. Otherwise, the owners of the USE certificate will have to take entrance to the old fashioned way.
Exam schedule
This year, graduates of the schools of experimental regions will take the obligatory exam in mathematics (with the exception of schoolchildren of the Orenburg and Novosibirsk regions) and three more of choosing: according to the Russian language, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history of Russia, foreign language, computer science and social science.
