Barack Obama for the "Equal Union"

The American president is trying to establish relations with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on April 17 in Trinidad and Tobago opened the American summit, at which chapters 34 states are going to discuss the global economic crisis, political disagreements and migration issues.

The main news of the fifth summit is the change in the foreign policy strategy of the White House. According to The International Herald Tribune , the cabinet of the new US President Barack Obama seeks to establish relations with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, in particular, with a Cuba, which until now is subjected to economic blockade from the United States and is not the organization of American states. A similar situation is a consequence of the political dishes of the two states.

In 1959, the power in Cuba received the "left" government led by Fidel Castro. In the United States, where all the dissatisfied with the regime emigrated, there was a real opposition movement against Castro policy. In August 1961, an American armed landing landed on the coast of the island, however, the US authorities failed to bring their idea to life. In addition, the Cuba Communist Party worked closely with the Soviet Union, which could not but affect relations with the United States.

Realizing the futility of political influences, the American authorities since 1962 began the economic blockade of Cuba, which led to the impoverishment of the population, the growth of crime and disease. At the 2009 summit, the presidents of several Latin America countries intend to make an ultimatum to terminate the economic blockade of Cuba. There is a great probability that this will really happen.

Speaking about changing the course in relation to the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, Barack Obama said: "I know that it should take a lot of time before we forget the former disagreements, but I am sure that we should take a step towards the future. My administration members will meet with the Cuban government and discuss a number of important issues." Raul Castro, in turn, announced his readiness for dialogue with the new US government.

According to RIA Novosti , the US relationship will be discussed at the summit not only with Cuba, but also with other countries of this region. According to Obama, America should not impose its position to neighboring countries, providing for the material assistance, but to create an “union of equal”, which would confront the complex political and economic situation around the world.

“I promise you that we will strive for an equal partnership based on the principles of mutual respect, general interests and values. There should be no senior and younger ones in our relationship,” Obama said.
