Geraldo Cruz Ribeiro was kidnapped on May 15, 1999 in Nalchik, near the sanatorium 'Blue spruce', where the MKKK mission rented premises. Around 12.00, when he and his translator got into the car, several armed people attacked them and took them outside the city to the new buildings. There, the translator was left connected in Toyota, owned by the ICRC, and the foreigner was transplanted to the “Lada” of the sixth model and taken away in an unknown direction.
As the investigation now managed to establish, the participants in the abduction were residents of Baksan Valery Bagov, Aslan Batyrov, Zaur Shaov and Rasul Getiriev, who specially united in a gang and acquired weapons - two pistols. According to investigators, its organizer was Valery Bagov. Within a few days they followed the movements of a foreigner and, having studied his daily routine, made a capture.
After the stolen was transplanted to the 'six', he was taken to the Tyzyl gorge. For four days, Ribeiro was kept in the mountains in the abandoned house of the foresters, waiting for the activity of law enforcement agencies to search for the missing foreigner. Then the hostage was transported to the Tersky district of Kabardino-Balkaria, bordering the Ingushetia, where Rasul Getiriev handed it to some accomplices, for which he received 40 thousand dollars.
New Zealand was transported to the territory of Chechnya, and he was released only two months later - July 23, 1999. The kidnappers managed to detain him much later - in December 2000. By that time, two of them were already dead. Rasul Getiriev died of tuberculosis in a prison hospital back in September 1999, after he was detained on suspicion of committing another crime - the abduction of a 17 -year -old resident Baksan Rustam Mammadov. And Zaura Shaova, as it turned out, killed his accomplices. At the end of November 2000, Shaov disappeared without a trace, and his relatives turned to the police. As a result, the operatives went to Valeria Bagov and Aslan Batyrov. After their detention, it also became known about the circumstances of the abduction of Geraldo Cruise Ribeiro.
As established by the investigation, from 40 thousand dollars received by Getiriev for the hostage, 4 thousand went to the costs of kidnapping a foreigner. The remaining amounts were divided. At the same time, Shaov received only 6.5 thousand dollars from Bagov, while the share of the rest was 9 thousand dollars. Because of this, quarrels constantly arose between them, Shaov demanded to return the missing 2.5 thousand, more than once came home to Bagov and threatened him. All this lasted almost a year and a half. In the end, the bugs and Batyrov decided to get rid of an annoying friend. On November 23, 2000, they made an appointment, during which Batyrov shot Shaov in his head. The body was buried in the field near the village of Kishpek, and the gun was thrown away near the place of murder.
At the preliminary investigation, Aslan Batyrov, as it became known to the 'newspaper', pleaded his guilt on all the episodes of the prosecution and at the same time indicated the places of the murder and burial of Shaov. Valery Bagov denied the fact of his participation in the abduction of Ribeiro, but said that Shaova killed Batyrov. However, upon presentation of the indictment in the final edition, both did not admit their guilt and refused to testify.
The trial of them should begin in the near future, but today with a sufficient degree of confidence we can say that Geraldo Cruz Ribeiro will not be present in the process. After his release, he flew out of Moscow in a hurry to Geneva, and then to New Zealand, and investigators did not even have the opportunity to interrogate him. Repeated appeals of the prosecutor’s office to the New Zealand colleagues with petitions for its delivery to Russia ended to no avail, since there is no legal assistance between our countries. Ribeiro himself voluntarily come to Russia after what happened to him here, has no desire.
