The island state is looking for salvation from the advancing ocean, the newly elected president of the Republic of Maldives Mohamed Nasda today made the initiative to buy a new homeland to his people. The fact is that the location of the state is the lowest in the world. About a thousand islands and atolls, of which the republic consists, are on average 2 meters above the Indian Ocean. And increasing the sea level due to global warming is the main threat to the territory of the Maldives. According to UN forecasts, the level of the oceans in the near century will increase by at least 60 centimeters.
Mohamed Nasid, whose inauguration as the first president in the history of the republic will take place tomorrow, promises to create a special fund for the purchase of new lands in the South Asian region, so that its fellow citizens would have where to escape from the Ocean’s upcoming homeland. Funds to the fund will come from tourism. The Maldives, known for their snow -white beaches and a warm ocean, are a very popular tourist area.
“Global warming and environmental problems are the most burning issues for our population,” Ibrahim Khussein Zaki, a press secretary, said yesterday. “Any increase in the ocean level can have a destructive effect for the country and become a threat to the very existence of the people.” The lands that the Maldives will strive to redeem first of all - these are territories with the similar population of the Maldives by culture. Perhaps these will be the lands of India or Sri Lanka.
