Religious viewers responded with angry messages. The filmmakers were called “demons” and “heretics.” Although the film was not intended to be a documentary, the opinions of believers revolved around the theme of authenticity. “This is a serious crime against Jesus Christ and Christians! The authors have no historical evidence to support their outrageous insinuations,” wrote one viewer.
Another noted: “The film was made to destroy the image of Christ who gave his life for our salvation. Netflix has made a movie that is impossible for families to watch. God created man and woman, and no one can change that.”
However, “Gay Jesus” is not the first Christmas story with a parody Christian theme. Last December, Netflix aired The Last Hangover , which won the International Emmy Award for Best Comedy of the Year.
The film told about the adventures of Jesus' disciples, who woke up with a hangover after the Last Supper and do not know where the Messiah went.
Historian Murilo Cleto tweeted about the petition: “Last year’s Christmas movie about Jesus, where he was portrayed as a hedonistic drunk who hated praying, somehow didn’t bother anyone. Now that he's portrayed as a nice gay guy, the world has obviously fallen apart. Just mind blowing."
Other famous faces expressed outrage at the film. Actor Carlos Veresa called the film a "trash porn movie" and wrote on Facebook that the studio is full of "pretentious idiots, fans of the New World Order, bent on destroying family and religion."
The petition against the Brazilian comedy is not surprising amid several attempts by homophobic President Bolsonaro to censor a number of films with gay themes and even ban a same-sex kiss in a comic book.
