Petro is a man on the track;
Maria is Peter's wife;
Pavlo is Peter's neighbor;
Ganya is Peter's lover;
Yarema is a finished drunkard;
Marko is a reporter.
Policemen, people on the platform.
A man in an old suit and cap is sitting on the railway track, next to the platform for suburban trains. He wraps his hands around his knees and looks into the distance. His face is tense, his gaze wild. Suddenly this man starts talking to himself.
Petro: Where is the sun today?! When will any train leave?! Marichka is about to wake up... She will think that I left the house at night. Yes, I could go... I still have somewhere to go... Is there already? I wonder what is going on in Ghana now... The man is probably going to work. What a job! If I had a job like that... No, I would never work as a security guard, let alone in a store. Never! It's the stupidest job in the world! You sit to yourself all day or all night and only blink your eyes. During the day, people jostle, run back and forth, back and forth, back and forth... But it is impossible to have a normal conversation with any person, because everyone is in a terrible hurry. For example, tell some idiot to leave the bottle of beer alone until he reaches the cash register with it, and he will send you three letters. That's the whole conversation, that's how they talked to themselves... It's good when some interesting woman turns up... Well, the kind that most men like - so that everything is just right for her... Oh, such women always know what to answer you, how to look at you. It is very good when such a woman works at the cash register... But it is rare, even very rare. That's why, you hear, (he threatens the sky with his fist) I will never go to work as a security guard in a store or in any other place. I wonder what's going on, Marichka... Did she wake up or is she still asleep... She didn't give birth to my children, so let her suffer from jealousy and loneliness now. But now there is nothing to mention about it. Almost nothing matters now... And it's still cold in the morning... It's May for you... If only Ganya hadn't crossed the track now... Where is that train? It would be better to go long distance. They drive faster. Someone is already leaving... Grandfather!
Pavlo: Wow!
Peter: Yes.
Pavel: What are you doing here?
Peter: I breathe the morning air. Go away, go… Can't you see that I need solitude and concentration?
Pavel: Are you drunk?
Peter: No.
Pavlo: Did you smoke something?
Peter: You smoked yourself.
Pavlo: What the hell are you sitting here?
Peter: Because it's nice here. You see how cozy it is here, how the birds are singing in the bushes. I'll listen to them a little more... And you go, go, Pavle. Leave me in the midst of this beauty.
Pavlo: Don't be stupid, neighbor. We have known you for twelve years.
Peter: So what?
Pavlo: And the fact that I can give you any advice. Because I know you well, Peter. And that's why I advise you to get up now and go home to your wife. can you hear me
Petro: No, I don't hear. I hear birds, I hear a plane somewhere in the sky, I hear a grumbling in my stomach... But I don't hear you, Pavle. Go yourself. You have an important job. You can't be late. I know you always come to work on time. Why would you now, because of me, disturb your established schedule.
Pavlo: Neighbor, I'll come back. What do you want to prove with this seat of yours on the track? You have such a beautiful wife. You don't have a very difficult job. How I wish I had a job like this…
Petro: Everything is decided, tomorrow you will go to my work instead of me. I give you my work. Just get off me now. If you make too much noise, people will gather... But I don't need people at all. I feel so good now, so easy... You can't even imagine how good it is to send everything to my uncle, to relax completely...
Pavlo: But what about you?
Peter: What's wrong with me... I'm fine. I do what I want. Maybe for the first time in my life I am doing as I see fit. Once upon a time, my parents taught me how to live, scared me with the difficulties of life, did not believe in me... Then I learned by doing stupid tasks. Then he started working, as they say, "for my uncle". Then the devil forced me to marry. Then…
Pavlo: But who has so many...
Peter: That's the point! That everyone, like robots, executes the same program. And I've been following it carefully until now. But my patience kicked in, you know? Let it all go, let it all disappear... Where is that train, uncle, take it away?! Pavel, don't stand here like the last sheaf in the field. I'm serious. They are waiting for you at work. You have children, you have old parents, you have loans... You have to go to work, Pavle. Leave me alone, for God's sake.
Pavel: No, I have to go to your wife or call the police. It's not a joke. This show you put on is starting to bore me. do you hear Do you think that…
Peter: I don't think anything. I know that for the first time I am doing exactly as I want. Tell me, when was the last time you did something like that? When could you tell yourself that your life belongs to you, that no one, not even close people, can control it? This is a very important question, Pavle. I only now realized how important it is.
Pavlo: No, I don't need to call the police, I need to call the mental hospital right away.
Peter: Don't you dare, because then I'll shoot myself (takes out a gun from his pocket and points it at his temple).
Pavlo: Quiet, quiet... I'm not calling anywhere, Peter. That you immediately ...
Peter: No need to call. Because when a person has finally decided something...
Pavel: Yes, yes...
Peter: Why does everyone think that a person must be saved...
Pavlo: But I just...
Peter: Why does everyone think that I don't know what I want, that I need to be constantly guided, that I don't have my own worldview. This is very offensive, Pavle. To live in the world for forty years and not have the opportunity to decide for yourself when and what to do.
Pavel: No one wishes you harm. I'm sure no one.
Peter: Are you sure...
Pavel: You are a little tired, my friend. did you drink yesterday You probably drank yesterday, had a fight with a woman, went to see your mistress, and she wasn't in the mood either. It all annoyed you terribly, it all seemed to you like a real conspiracy... It was, am I right? And then again... Then you got very bored. Oh, I know how it is... You thought that everything was against you, that.... Well, you understand me. And that's why you decided to show yourself a little... This is also understandable. I myself sometimes want to take up arms and attack this stupid world. I sincerely want, Peter! But I understand that it will pass quickly... You just need to get drunk in time, you just need to remind yourself.
Peter: Go to work, Pavle.
Pavlo: Yes, I'll go, I'll go... Just don't be nervous, because there's nothing to be nervous about. I understand that there are things that are difficult to talk about. For example, about some serious illness... Maybe you got sick? Yes, you got sick and want to cross yourself. But it's never too late to start a fight... Do you hear that, Peter? It is never too late to go to the doctor, borrow money from friends, pray...
Peter: Why don't you go, Paul…. You see, you can't convince me, because I'm not sick, this whole world is sick (draws a circle in the air with a pistol). No, at first I thought differently... I thought I didn't understand something. I thought for a long time, Pavle. You know, we were not trained to think, we were trained to work, from early years, until we lost consciousness... But over time, I trained myself to think. That is, I began to take my eyes off the ground. Sometimes he started to look up. And then I realized something...
Pavlo: Well, you understood something there... But we are not all to blame for that.
Peter: Guilty!
Pavel: Why?
Peter: Because you don't try to think for yourself and prevent others from thinking.
Pavel: I will go to Maria, Peter. I see that I myself will not convince you... Maybe Maria will explain it better... You are something very wrong... I left...
Peter: Stop, friend (points a gun at Paul). You will not go to my woman, you will immediately go to your shitty job! I don't want to shoot you, but I'm not going to persuade you either. Therefore, you will now cross the track and head to the place where you have been waiting for twenty minutes. Mind you, I'm not kidding. I don't have time for jokes.
Pavel: (frightened) Yes, I will go. I'm going, you see...
Peter: No, I don't see it yet. Faster, my friend, faster! That's how you love your work, lazy people (laughs). Say hello to your boss. I know he likes my wife. Then you tell him that she will be free soon. So say it, Pavle!
Pavlo crosses the track, looks over his shoulder at Peter once more, and then leaves the stage with an expression of fear and surprise on his face. The lights on the stage go out.
The place of action is the same. Peter walks along the track and checks the gun. It can be seen that he is nervous. He looks around and sometimes takes off his cap, then puts it back on. Suddenly he notices someone and quickly gets on the track. A little later, a frightened Ganya appears on the stage.
Ganya: Is that you?!
Peter: You see that I am. What wind brought you here! Go, go, where you were going...
Ganya: You are crazy!
Peter: No, I recently recovered, Ganya. But we have to talk about it for a long time, I'm not in the mood right now. It's already getting warmer. That's good. Does your husband sometimes not go fishing?
Ganya: Are you mocking?
Peter: I'm sorry I didn't come yesterday. I wanted to be alone, to move... The guys called me for a drink, but I refused. I really wanted to, but I refused, Ganyu. I was thinking about you. You know, I rarely don't think about you...
Ganya: Come with me, Peter. Don't be ashamed... Take your things from home and come to me. I already told my husband about us...
Peter: You? did she say And him? Why did you do it?
Ganya: Because, as it turned out, everyone knows that you and I are together. And my Vasyl also knew... He is moving to the village, to his parents. He wanted to return to the village for a long time and suffered in the city because of me. The children, of course, will stay with me, but I will often take them to my mother. She doesn't mind. She understands that I work in a bank and can't...
Peter: Huh... It's not even interesting somehow.
Ganya: Not interested? Of course, it's more interesting to sit on the tracks with a gun in your hand.
Petro: Yes, much more interesting! I still want to undress, because for some reason I got very hot. Aren't you hot, Ganya?
Ganya: Please, Peter, don't do this! I didn't blame you for anything.
Peter: You are all to blame, everyone... Because you always expected something from me. You kept making me do things I didn't want to do. And it's my fault that I didn't send you all sooner, that I obeyed your stupid demands for so long (takes off his clothes and remains only in his underpants).
Ganya: But we were good together. Remember how you and I started dating... It was the end of August...
Petro: I don't want to talk about it (folds clothes on the track and sits on it).
Ganya: The air was warm and clean...
Peter: I don't care at all.
Ganya: Ripe plum berries fell on the sidewalks and clung to the soles...
Petro: Why do you remember all this?
Ganya: I came home from work in a very short skirt, in a red coat with high heels...
Peter: I don't understand what you want to prove to me.
Ganya: My legs were tanned then, and I purposely walked a little slower so that the men could get a good look at them...
Peter: I don't want to know that.
Ganya: I was naked under the skirt then. It excited me. This excitement was transmitted to the men who met me on the way... It was transmitted to you, Peter. Will you object?
Peter: I don't care.
Ganya: No, then you didn't care at all. You approached me and asked: "Are you married?". It surprised me a little, but I did not hide the wedding rings. I told you, "Yes, married, but it doesn't matter much." You smiled and invited me for coffee. do you remember
Peter: What do you need from me? You see that I have already made up my mind. You want to talk to me, but you will not succeed. Leave me alone, you hear? Go to your Vasyl. You will still be fine.
Ganya: If I didn't love you...
Petro: No need, Ganya.
Ganya: No, you must listen to me, you must hear... I am already over forty, I have children, I have a husband with whom I have never had love. Of course, there are hundreds of women like me in our city, but what do I care about them. Whoever is happy is right - that's what they say, it seems. And I had simple female happiness with you, and my friends were jealous of me, and everything was wonderful... But there was always something like that in you. You always lacked something. And I could never explain to myself what exactly is gnawing at you... So even now I don't understand your behavior. Have you decided to kill yourself? Do you want to make people close to you unhappy? Very good, Peter. I suspected that you have vivid fantasies about women... But I didn't even suppose that you want to die somehow strangely.
Peter: Have you ever asked me about happiness? You asked me: do you like everything? are you satisfied with everything? I am very glad that you have found your simple female happiness... But I will never find my male one. where are my sons where is my home Where is my tree under that house? I don't know when everything went wrong... Why everything turned out so disgustingly in my life...
Ganya: I always thought that...
Petro: Yes, Ganyu, you are handsome, beautiful. I had real love with you, experienced many sweet moments...
Ganya: And you will have more, my love! come to me Take your clothes and let's go home... I'll make us some delicious coffee, I....
Peter: I see, you don't hear me at all. I am now where I need to be. I am between heaven and earth, on my track. Which of the people can confidently say that he has found his groove? Everyone just complains that life is passing by, or pretends that they have achieved what they wanted. No, I'm not interested in it at all. Let others adapt, lick their ass with this stupid life...
Ganya: Did you really have such a bad life?
Peter: I had a terrible life, Ganya. Only now, sitting on the track, I realized how late I was with the changes...
Ganya: It's not a change, it's... end.
Peter: Look up, Ganyu. Look around you. what do you see
Ganya: Don't make a fool of me.
Peter: You see how beautiful it is around us... The bushes are blooming beautifully, the grass is growing beautifully, the birds are singing beautifully... (he straightens up to his full height and starts shouting) The sun is shining beautifully, the clouds are flying beautifully in the sky, the wind is blowing beautifully, the leaves are fluttering beautifully on the trees, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful....
Ganya: Enough, enough, Peter! You've gone completely crazy, you need to be taken to a doctor immediately (searches for phone in bag).
Peter: (looks at Ganya with fierce eyes) Just try to do it! Just refer me to a doctor or some other shitty goat! (points a gun at his temple). If I see someone here in uniform, I'll shoot myself. You hear me, woman! I'll shoot myself with this iron crap.
Ganya: (begins to retreat little by little, looking at her lover with frightened eyes) You are no longer my Peter. Someone else is talking to me. The one who always sat in you. I'll go, I'll go...
Peter: Yes, there is nothing more for you to do here.
Ganya: I will go...
Peter: Don't call anyone else to me. Believe me, it won't give anything, it won't change anything...
Ganya: (very quietly) What is this doing to you... Don't kill anyone. My God….
Petro: Hey-hoy! Go faster, faster! I'm following you.
Ganya begins to walk faster, and then runs, holding the bag and pausing. Petro shouts something else after her, but then quickly sits down on the track and covers his head with his hands. The lights on the stage go out.
The platform is flooded with light. Petro is lying on the track, covering his eyes from the sun with his hand with the gun. He begins to sing softly. Then he hears someone singing to him from the bushes. Because of this, he sits down on the track and looks intently in the direction where the singing is coming from. Almost immediately, drunkard Yarem crawls out of the bushes, dragging a dirty orange bag behind him.
Peter: Who are you going to take this to, friend?
Yarema: It looks like you're okay.
Peter: No, you can't come to me.
Yarema: Why?
Petro: Because I am a dangerous, sick person. Everyone tells me so. Do you see this gun?
Yarema: I see.
Peter: Then where are you going to go, you idiot!
Yarema: What do I need your gun... I don't prevent you from playing with it. I myself have something to do (opens the package and takes out an opened bottle, closed with a paper stopper). will you
Peter: No. I have work to do.
Yarema: And so what... The matter will not escape you.
Petro: The case may not run away, but I can run away from the case because of your vodka. Therefore, drink and hide this poison so that I will not see it again.
Yarema: (takes three big gulps) In vain, in vain refused... When it's completely bad, it helps a little. Listen, can I go with you too?
Peter: What?
Yarema: But I will sit with you a little here, from the edge... (crawls to the very track)
Peter: Don't you understand why I'm sitting here?
Yarema: But why not... I understand, of course. That's why I want to wait with you. Maybe sing something...
Petro: Friend, I am waiting for death.
Yarema: And who is not waiting for her. Or some oligarch who lost his mind because of money. He is probably going to live forever. And really, why should he not live when everything is possible.
Peter: What is your name?
Yarema: The woman calls Yarema, and her friends call her Yarko.
Peter: Peter (holds out his hand to Yaremi).
Yarema: Did you get fired or something? There are probably many children and nothing to feed. It always happens like this... Five children, a sick wife, no job... So what should Ivan do who is in such trouble. It happened to me somewhere like that...
Petro: No, I am sitting here of my own free will.
Yarema: How is it...
Peter: Because I understood that everything in this world is set against man. Only maybe trees and birds are not, but everything else is against it. Why are you drinking, Yarema?
Yarema: But do I drink... I drink little by little, for the sake of my mood.
Peter: Don't say that... You drink because life doesn't turn out the way you want it to. You may not know how it should work for you, but you feel that something is wrong... Yes or no?
Yarema: Maybe so... But life is still good. No matter what disaster happens, there is always hope that tomorrow will be a little easier.
Petro: And what to do when it doesn't get easier? When everything just gets worse... Don't you see that a person is not considered a person, that everything is for sale, that there is no hope for anyone?!
Yarema: That is true, but I still have hope...
Petro: To whom?
Yarema: On him, probably... (raises his eyes upwards).
Peter: Everyone hopes in Him, but not everyone is lucky.
Yarema: That's true.
Petro: And if it is true, then you must understand why I am sitting here right now. Let those who are not lucky continue to reassure themselves, hope for something. Let the successful think that they achieved success through their own efforts. But I sit on the track and know that the distribution took place even before they were born, that they all have only what they have always had.
What is your name?
