“This is the first time this has happened to me: recently I was swimming in the lake, and my leg cramped in the water! Neither straighten nor move - how to swim further? It’s good that my friends were nearby and dragged me to the shore. What if I'm alone? How to help yourself?
Anatoly Kupriyanov, Lobnya" The classic advice of pricking your foot with a pin will not work here. Simply because, as always, you won’t have a pin with you. Here's what will help: pinch yourself on the calf muscle. As soon as you feel your leg cramping, form a float, hold your breath for a while and lower yourself under the water. There, try to pinch yourself on the calf as hard as possible. Strong painful stimulation will weaken the cramp. This is a reflex technique: you switch your attention from one focus to another. Just don't be afraid to dive underwater. And yet, if you inhale, nothing will happen: you won’t be able to stay on the water.
There is no way to prevent this. Heavy strain on the muscles and cold water can cause such stupor even in trained athletes. I myself have been involved in underwater sports before and I know what it is. Swimming for a long time with fins sometimes made my leg stiff. But I dealt with this using a method that I recommend to you.
