The Russian president was embarrassed to come to our team’s defeat in Vancouver.“We are waiting for Dmitry Anatolyevich in Vancouver on February 25,” Leonid Tyagachev promised a week ago. - There are still four days left before the end of the competition, and Medvedev will have time to see a lot of interesting things. Including the final of the men's hockey tournament - as we all believe, with the participation of the Russian national team. And, of course, I really hope that Dmitry Anatolyevich will accept my invitation to attend the snowboard competition in parallel giant slalom.
After the hockey players’ failure in the quarterfinals, Medvedev politely declined the invitation. They expected him at the closing ceremony of the games, but he did not attend that either.
“I don’t know if the president is angry about the unsuccessful performances of Russian athletes, but I think that, like the vast majority of Russians, he is in a bad mood about this,” Alexander Bardin, the non-staff Russian consul in Vancouver, threw up his hands. And the overseas press rejoiced:
“Medvedev understood the situation well and decided not to show up at the event, which is perceived as a national failure. Any fanatic with a healthy dose of sports patriotism can understand the Russians' irritation. Nobody likes to lose."
But love is different. Our Olympians had all the objective prerequisites for losing: a weak sports base for training (there is no need to explain here), the demographic and economic failure of the 90s (when the guys, in fact, began to train), nepotism of sports officials (in the same figure skating, a non-professional is responsible for training pairs, and advanced talents are forced to compete for other powers, receiving medals for them), useless pharmaceutical science (Western champions use stimulants, which are recognized as doping only after two years), useless material incentives (our coaches prefer to train other people’s medalists)…
The list could go on for a long time, but there is only one conclusion: Russia’s Olympic successes were simply stolen, and the fact that Medvedev did not come to Vancouver is a consequence of shame, rather, not for the athletes, but for himself.
To show up in Canada and look our losers in the eyes requires a special kind of courage, which the president did not have. Our team was once again betrayed by the authorities. It turns out that she can love her citizens only for something, such as successes and victories, and not for nothing (which is actually called love). From the outside, Medvedev’s action looks as if the husband had not brought home the bonus, and his wife had told him: “I don’t love you anymore and I won’t bake pies!” A kindergarten unworthy of a president.
However, power in Russia is the flesh of the Russians themselves. We all have this attitude towards sports. The football players won - they were national heroes, but as soon as they missed the championship, they were disgraced at every corner. This is not good. Athletes must be respected even in defeat, maybe then they themselves will begin to respect themselves and stop being embarrassed so awkwardly.
