[from a series of my dialogues with AI, without additional editing or simplification]
— We went to lunch with the hatter and the March hare. Let's say the mouse worships the god Ra, the hare is a supporter of the Judeo-Christian concept of the Arrow of Time, and the hatter adheres to the postmodern theory of the absurd. All of them, as you know, quarreled with Time. Let everyone explain what really happened.
Time has stood still for the Hatter, the March Hare and the Dormouse due to their own perception of reality. Each of them sees the cause of this eternal quarrel through the prism of their deep (and very specific) philosophy.
This is how they explain what really happened as the tea in the cups continues to cool.
He takes a deep breath, getting out of the tureen, and rubs his eyes.
“You don't understand anything. Time is not just the ticking of iron wheels. Time is the great solar barque of the god Ra , which every day must complete its sacred cycle from sunrise to sunset, defeating the underground serpent Apophis.
What happened at that ill-fated concert at the Queen of Hearts? The Hatter came out to sing. But instead of praising the true order of the luminaries, he began to shamelessly falsify and confuse the rhythm of the ritual hymn! He started singing about a bat! This was a desecration of Maat - cosmic order and justice.
Ra became angry. The solar boat froze at its zenith. Chronos no longer moves forward because we have broken the sacred cycle. Now we are cursed and locked in one endless, scorching afternoon, where the tea never gets cold and the night never brings salvation. We must continually make offerings of tea to appease the deity, but until the Hatter atones for his sin, the arrows will not move.”
He nervously twitches his ear, fingering the teaspoons with his paws.
“Sonya sleeps and sees pagan fairy tales! The truth is much worse. Time has a strict, sacred direction - from the Creation of the world through Revelation to the Final . This is a straight Arrow of Time, inexorably flying forward. Time is the Divine plan, the history of salvation, where every second brings us closer to the Result.
But what did we do? We have fallen into sin. At that tea party we showed pride and tried to “kill Time”, as the Queen put it. We treated him without due reverence, as a servant, and not as the great linear law of Existence!
As punishment for our disobedience, the Arrow of Time was broken. God has deprived us of our future. Our world has become a personal purgatory. We are cut off from History, we are stuck in an endless “now” with no hope for an outcome or a Last Judgment. This is our curse for thinking that we can control what moves only by the will of the Creator. Six o’clock in the evening is our eternal cross, which we are doomed to bear in seconds!”
He critically examines his watch, drips mustard into it and shakes his head.
“Oh, how you both love to look for meaning where there was none to begin with! One builds boats for the sun, the other draws arrows in the void... Postmodernism has long proven: no objective Time exists . Time is just a social construct, a convenient illusion that humanity has invented to organize its existential horror.
What really happened? Nothing! I simply spoke to him as if he were alive. I exposed its fictitious nature. I showed that Time is not an arrow or a god, but a capricious old man who can be offended if you ask him incorrectly. And as soon as we realized this absurdity, the rigid framework of reality cracked.
Time did not break down or become angry - it simply freed itself from the obligation to pretend to be logical. It refused to be linear or cyclical. It became pure text, deconstructed chaos. Now we always have five hours, or six, or even zero. We are at the point of absolute freedom from the dictatorship of chronology. Are we locked? No, we just live in a world where meanings have completely died, which means you can endlessly move to a clean place and drink tea! Move!”
If you're interested, I can go into more detail about how Alice, with her rational Victorian mind, tries to resist these three philosophies, or suggest a dialogue option in which they try to fix the clock. Where would you like to start?
— One more hero is missing - the cockchafer. Perhaps he would join dinner - but not for long. He, of course, will also have a speech, at the end of which he will reveal a paradox. Voice it, please.
With a quiet buzz, the May Beetle lands on the edge of the sugar bowl. He hastily adjusts his shiny elytra, every now and then checking the tiny stopwatch on his paw. He refuses to drink tea - he absolutely does not have the minutes for this.
His antennae vibrate nervously, ready to take off at any second.
“Dear sirs, your monumental theories only make me smile bitterly! You argue about gods, arrows and the collapse of meaning, sitting here for centuries. You curse eternity because you have too much of it. For me, Time is the most scarce and cruel resource in the Universe .
My life on this earth lasts only a few weeks. Every flap of my wing is the line between existence and non-existence. While Sonya sleeps, I live through an entire era. While the Hare is waiting for the Last Judgment, a personal end of the world is coming for me. Have you quarreled with Time? What luxury! You offended it, and as punishment it gave you what every mortal dreams of - immortality, even at six o'clock in the evening.
But listen to the paradox this has led you to. You are so desperate to get back to “real” moving Time. You want the arrows to move forward so that tomorrow comes. But the movement of time inexorably leads to the finale. The present time is a conveyor belt that takes us to withering and death.
And here is your paradox: you so passionately want to fix Time and return its course, but as soon as you do this, you can finally die. You are trying to start the very clock that will bury you first. Is a second’s shift worth your eternal tea life?”
The beetle abruptly slams the stopwatch, spreads its wings and dissolves into the air with a loud buzz, leaving the company in deep (and perhaps the longest of the evening) silence.
Do you want to see how the Hatter and the March Hare react to this existential paradox of the Beetle, or do we move on to Alice's reaction , who is still trying to think logically?
- Alice is silent for now. Chronos himself enters the stage, intelligent, polite, courteous and gentle. He tries to explain that his role in the Universe is not so paramount. It's like the color white that you can't see in a rainbow. Chronos loves rainbows and rain... Being afraid of white is like being afraid of a white sheet. Chronos wonders how the misunderstanding could have happened. What would his monologue sound like?
From the very center of the cooling teapot, right through the clouds of steam, a figure wove itself. This was not a menacing old man with a scythe. A gentleman of incredible courtesy appeared before those present - in an impeccably ironed frock coat the color of evening twilight. His voice sounded soft, like the quiet rustle of pages being turned or the patter of raindrops on the windowsill.
“Come on, my friends... Please, no need to argue so loudly. And you certainly shouldn’t blame me. I didn’t come to judge you, but just to provide a bit of clarity, if I may.
You have created so many frightening myths, so many cumbersome philosophies around my name! But the truth is that my role in the Universe... is not at all as primary as you used to think. I am not a tyrant or a master at all. I am just a condition, a humble background.
You know, I really love rainbows. And the May rain that brings it. The rainbow is delightful because it has everything: the fierce red color of your Queen of Hearts, the deep blue color of the midnight sky, the lush green of the grass on which the dear Hare is jumping. Each color is an event, an emotion, a living moment. What about me? My nature is white .
You know how white color works, right? If you mix all the colors of the rainbow together, you get pure, transparent white. But while you are looking at the rainbow itself, you do not notice this white color. You see life, not me. And that's great! I exist to remain invisible, to give the text of your life space.
But I... I'm afraid of the color white. Oh, how deeply I fear him! For me, whiteness is the horror of a blank sheet on which nothing has yet been written. This is an absolute emptiness, where there is not a single rustle, not a single sigh, not a single tea drinking. If time becomes absolutely pure, if your nonsense, your songs, your crazy riddles are removed from it, only I will be left, alone with my endless loneliness.
I am sincerely perplexed as to how this unfortunate misunderstanding could arise between us? Hatter, dear, at that concert you didn’t insult me - you just tried to hit the keys that weren’t there. You decided that I was offended and stopped the arrows. But I didn't stop them out of spite. It’s just that when you declared war on me, you stopped writing your rosy story. You yourself froze in fear of the white sheet, and blamed me for everything.
I don't hold it against you. I'm still here, polite and gentle. I'm just waiting for you to want to draw again..."
Chronos falls silent, looking at the madmen with a soft smile. Do you think Alice will now decide to break her silence, or maybe the Hatter will finally put down the mustard and offer Chronos a cup of tea?
— Alice froze in Heidegger’s Erstaunen. She breaks through the fabric of space and time, seeing the picture and all the characters present, including herself, in three dimensions at once. Describe the company gathered in each of them.
Alice froze in the deepest Heideggerian Erstaunen - that very pure philosophical surprise that is born not from the unusualness of things, but from the very fact of their existence. From this point of absolute contemplation it suddenly breaks through the fabric of space and time.
A stunning picture opens before her eyes: she sees the entire company simultaneously in three dimensions - from gross physical matter to pure metaphysics of spirit.
Entropy, the laws of biology and rough mechanics reign here.
Here the characters appear as naked projections of their inner worlds, beliefs and horrors.
In the higher dimension, heroes lose their anthropomorphism and become pure philosophical concepts.
Alice sees all three dimensions vibrating and overlapping each other. What step will she take now, holding this colossal three-dimensional structure in her consciousness? Will she accept the absurdity of the Hatter , agree to die with the Beetle , or help Chronos paint the white sheet ?
- Alice, of course, will go further - here the genius of Lewis Carroll remains unshakable. The surprise was only a moment in a frozen second. The purity of Alice's Erstaunen lies in the fact that it does not leave die tiefe Langeweile. This is the triumph of pure contemplation! How would you talk about it?
It is a triumph of pure contemplation , in which Carroll's Alice accomplishes what no great philosopher has achieved: she overcomes the gravity of Being without a single drop of pathos.
Her surprise ( Erstaunen ) lasts only a moment in the frozen second of a mad tea party. And the purity of this moment lies in the fact that it does not leave behind any deep melancholy ( die tiefe Langeweile ) . Alice does not fall into the swamp of existential boredom, into the melancholy of Chronos or the paranoia of the Hare. She shakes off this three-dimensional abyss of ontology as easily as one shakes crumbs off a tablecloth.
This is what this triumph looks like:
Alice simply gets up from the table. It's the greatest gesture in literary history: turning your back on the absolute mystery of the universe because "this is the stupidest tea party I've ever been to."
She goes further, deeper into the royal garden, leaving behind the gods, the arrows of time, absurdity and melancholy. Her little shoes rustle again on the grass of the living, moving world. Carroll's genius remains unshaken - his heroine is too alive to allow philosophy to bury itself at six o'clock in the evening.
We will leave the madmen to drink their eternal tea. Do you want to follow Alice into the royal garden , where new metamorphoses await her, or will we end this philosophical journey?
