Dear friends! In recent weeks, the number of Dar subscribers has increased significantly and exceeded two and a half thousand. I welcome new readers and participants of "The Gift"! The goal of this project is the creative development of the Russian language, enriching it with new lexical and conceptual capabilities, words and meanings.
I remind you that “The Gift of Speech” is open to the co-creation of all readers. Send your new words, ideas and suggestions for the creative development of the Russian language, as well as comments on all published words and materials - your letters will definitely find a place on the pages of our mailing list.
In the previous two issues, summing up the fifth anniversary of “The Gift”, we published 14 of the most popular words that have entered or are coming into use (“scoops”, “videology”, “eroticon”, “metarealism”, “lyublya”, “osEtit”, “single word” ", "to make time", "real", etc.). In this issue, 8 more one-words are published. Then we give the floor to the poet, essayist, word-maker, member of the Writers' Union Alexei Filimonov (St. Petersburg), whose essay is devoted to the mystical properties of the word and ways to update it.
Words are given in order of decreasing frequency of use, which is determined by Yandex . Each word is given with a reference to the corresponding issue of "The Gift" or to another source, accompanied by a definition and examples, as well as dates of first use and publication (sometimes these vary greatly, especially in Soviet times). The terms are described briefly, but contain a link to a more detailed presentation.
transculture, transcultural 3860
In English (Google): transculture 4,180; transcultural 309,000.
First 1983, "Letters on Transculture." The report “Culturology and Transculture” was read out in February 1988 at the opening of the Laboratory of Contemporary Culture at the Experimental Creative Center (Moscow, Vspolny Lane). Publication: Speak the language of all cultures. //Science and life, 1990, #1, pp. 100-103. The book "Transcultural Experiments: Russian and American Models of Creative Communication", New York, 1999. The book "Space Sign: On the Future of the Humanities", M. NLO, 2004, pp. 622-634.
transculture - a new sphere of cultural development for
boundaries of established national, racial, gender, professional cultures. Transculture overcomes the isolation of their traditions, linguistic and value determinations and opens up the field of “supracultural” creativity.
If culture frees a person from the physical dependencies and determinations of nature, then transculture is the next order of liberation, this time from the symbolic dependencies, predispositions and prejudices of the native culture. Today, the cultures within which our initial identification took place are increasingly perceived as the past of humanity, as a kind of second nature, liberation from which opens up in the space of transculture . At the same time, transculture in no way cancels our “cultural body,” a set of symbols and habits given to us from birth and upbringing. After all, being in a culture does not cancel our physical body, but multiplies its symbolic meanings. The culture of food or the culture of desire - the ritual of feasting, the ritual of courtship, etc. - this is liberation from the direct instincts of hunger and lust, their creative deferment, symbolic mastery and conscious enjoyment of them. The body does not disappear in culture, but slavery to the body disappears. Exit to the region is exactly the same transculture does not eliminate the significance of primary cultures, but enriches and even strengthens them, because any element of them is no longer dictated, like tradition, but is freely chosen, like an artist choosing colors to combine them in a new way in a picture. Transcultural creativity uses the palette of all cultures. The simplest example: the same rice has a different taste for a Chinese in a medieval village and for a Frenchman in modern Paris, because rice after cheese with wine or after liver pate is a completely different dish than rice after rice after rice. Transculturally, I myself choose which cultural traditions to join and to what extent to make them my own. Elements of certain primary cultures are additionally colored and combined in a variety of ways in the space of transculture .

It’s not that he loved anyone, but his heart asked for love, and not even love, but some kind of boundless love : beloved and loving faces, eyes, voices...The gaze is directed into the distance, the mind into the depths, and the heart into love.
To absorb - to actively absorb, capture into oneself. This verb describes the action of yomi itself - concave space: volumes, containers, receptacles, vaginas, which not only serve as a place of invasion, but themselves “embrace”, “embrace”, draw in, contain, embrace. There are two main meanings of the verb: spatial and sexual action.
1. To draw in, absorb, suck in (draft of empty or concave space).
A strange space surrounded him: it was crushing on all sides. It seemed as if invisible views were opening up, now to the right, now to the left, and the snowflakes that had just hovered before his eyes were carried away there. One could say “blow”, only it was not a convex, but a concave wind. There was food everywhere.2. Verb of female sexual action: actively accept, “have”, absorb a man into oneself.
In this meaning, “yat” is a conversion of the verb “Yarit”: “the sun burns the earth” - “the earth eats the sun.”
The girl-fire: she will pester the guy, take him to the hayloft - and let’s eat. Until dawn she's so tired, so crazy, that the guy then runs after her like he's been dried out. Pretty girl.__________________________________________________________________
SPIRIT OF EXTRAORDINARY
Alexey Filimonov (St. Petersburg)
I have learned to you, blessed words
O. Mandelstam
It’s as if the crystal of the sky turned towards us with a new, hitherto unknown facet, and new words appeared on its “screen blue” - caught by the ghostly web of the Web in “The Gift of the Word” (in V. Nabokov’s novel “The Gift” the Russian word, like an exiled messenger -prophet - was both a co-author and the hero of the book). What new tasks does Newspeak pose for its co-creators, created here and now, a thousand years after the Russian Logos acquired the flesh and blood of the Word? Like photosynthesis, this process is irreversible, and if Speech is likened to the universal Tree, then its shimmering Russian branch is unusually plastic and all-pervasive.
“The shadow of the Russian branch” (V. Nabokov), consisting of both new formations and half-forgotten vocabulary (A. Solzhenitsyn’s new reading and interpretation of the rarely used words of V. Dahl’s dictionary), which appears synthetic, is projected not only onto the shaky edge of a monitor, dictionary or notebook, but also rushes into other dimensions, through “an almost painful shudder” (A. Pushkin), through Dante’s circles of hell, dragging along his guide or scribe. Like a kind of spiritual network, a new word (with a catch, with a catch) penetrates our world, making it transparent, going to the beginnings and root causes, and perhaps to consequences and results, developing from entelechy into the butterfly of the Universe.
Just as the New Heaven and the New Earth are ready for the arrival of the New Word through purification and re-creation, so the New Word performs with its messenger and prophet an act of rebirth, similar to that which takes place in A. Pushkin’s poem “The Prophet”. Cruel vivisection and replacement of organs in the poet’s lines is a metaphor for those invisible transformations that occur with the brain and energy of a person who is a conductor of the New Word, heavenly food. His relationships with people also become different. Truly, such transformations, still incomprehensible to us, are the theme for the short story of the future Borges: the creation of a new humanity in the image and likeness of a new Speech, born from dreams.
But are the words of the new dictionary addressed only to real people? Do not there also exist in some parallel or intersecting dimension some extra-words, facing outwards, into the otherworldly? There are many words in the Russian language that do not exactly deny themselves, but assert with the help of the particle non- (extra-, non-) some imaginary nature of their purpose: “sky, Neva, tenderness, nectar, seal, seine, nervous.” It seems to be quite difficult to invent, to create words with non-words, although they represent a significant part of the vocabulary of metaphysical poetry. Perhaps these are words of extra-existence, revealed in the Logos of Russia as a reminder of that grandiose battle, imaginary and real, which is being waged in the skies and on the earth of Russia for the Word. The language of the Word - “the sword of the mouth” (Rev. 2:16), punishing and creating, seems to always be raised above us. Truly a fatal rhyme: sword and speech . But not only pre-apocalyptic battles take place before our inner vision and hearing. “I am not the Battle of Nations, I am new, / From me the world will be bright,” O. Mandelstam addresses his comrades.
The “Gift of the Word” opens the amalgams of eternity, opening the third millennium with the new coming of the Russian Word, one-blooded and one-uterine for all who have touched Him. This Word is not at odds with Number and other languages. Everyone who takes part in His creation, as grandiose mystical as the construction of the ancient Egyptian pyramids - a stonecutter, a priest, a servant, and a Pharaoh. People gain immortality through the Word, scorched by His icy fire.
Unfortunately, words perish or are expelled from the world, along with their carriers - the people, as language creators and apprentices, who felt an everyday and organic connection with the cosmos, lose it in big cities. The unity of language in the concept of people and language as speech today is becoming more and more elusive, and Russian speech itself sometimes resembles the ruins of the Colosseum. Isn’t this one of the reasons for the birth of the “Projective Lexicon”, overshadowed by Mnemosyne, when the heavenly people, the language of eternity, participates in the birth of new words and does not allow what has been accumulated to be forgotten?
The new dictionary is open to few people today. But the new Word passes through everyone, and everyone can cast off the “dumb and deaf spirit” (Mark 9:25) and awaken in themselves the “heavy gift of secret hearing” (V. Khodasevich). In what dimension this “Response of Heaven” (O. Mandelstam) to the eternal questioning and expectation will occur - human or otherwise - is no longer so important.

network project Mikhail Epstein's "The Gift of Words" has been published since April 17, 2000. Every week, several new words are sent to subscribers, with definitions and examples of use. These words are not in any dictionary, and yet they denote significant phenomena and concepts for which there has not yet been a place in the language and public consciousness. "Dar" also conducts discussions about the Russian language, discusses letters and suggestions from readers. “The Gift” can serve as a guide to word creation, an introduction to the world of linguistic fantasies and mental technologies. “The word controls the brain, the brain controls the hands, hands control the kingdoms” (Velimir Khlebnikov).
