Italian Gilberto Simoni is the winner of the 16th stage of the Vuelta cycling race.

Simoni, who rides for the Lampre-Daikin team, won the 16th stage of the Vuelta cycling race across Spain. It took him 4 hours 38 minutes 3 seconds to cover the distance of 168 kilometers between the cities of Gijon and Alto de L'Angliru. The leader's golden jersey was retained by Spaniard Roberto Heras from Kelme.
