Book of the Year
Marshak S.Ya. That's how absent-minded he is. - M.
Events
In March, in “Komsomolskaya Pravda” (M. Grebennikov), in “Pravda” (M. Gelfand), in “Literaturnaya Gazeta” (I. Novich), and then in all other print media, the persecution of the “Perevaltsev” began as successors literary, political and methodological concepts of A. Voronsky and his school.
Headings of articles devoted to this process: “Here they sit out from reality,” “Unburied dead,” etc.
M. Gelfand : “The worldview and method of the “Pass” are creeping intuitionism.”
Members of the council and activists of "Pereval" at this time were: I. Kataev, B. Guber, A. Novikov, A. Malyshkin, N. Zarudin, P. Pavlenko, D. Gorbov, P. Sletov, E. Vikhrev, A. Lezhnev, N. Smirnov, S. Pakentrager, G. Glinka, N. Zamoshkin, V. Kudashev.
The literary concept of V.F. Pereverzev is widely discussed and condemned for its Menshevik views.
On April 9, died from tuberculosis of the throat (read alcoholism) the poet I.S. Rukavishnikov .
On April 14 , at 10:15 am, V. Mayakovsky committed suicide in his office .
“Comrades! A huge poet has died. So huge that our imagination is too small to truly imagine it.” (N. Aseev, Little Volodya and Big Volodya. "Red Nov", #6).
On December 25, the oldest peasant poet S.D. Drozhzhin died .
Fadeev A.: “It is known that at one time the Young Guard published a politically erroneous story by Artem Vesely “The Naked Truth”. It is known that the Central Committee of the party condemned this serious mistake of Artem Vesely. It is known that communist criticism revealed the content and roots of this mistake of Artem Vesely. It is known, finally, that Artem Vesely himself admitted his mistake ... There will be no harm if someone again and again criticizes this mistake in a proletarian way. But nothing other than the desire to curry favor can be explained by what was published in the "Young Guard" (# 1. - E.O. ) Joseph Utkin’s poetic response to “The Naked Truth” - a response in which Artem Vesely is credited with nothing more or less than the desire to return the old tsarist system and “noble flesh” - a response that ends with the following hooligan attack :
So here it is("Literary Newspaper", #5).
Guiz is undertaking the publication of the "Anniversary" collected works of L. Tolstoy.

Evgeny Zamyatin. "Red Nov", #1.
"Zamiatin never tires of mocking the Soviet order; he has become as sophisticated as a virtuoso in this matter. His works are harmful. Literature, like any other form of art, is one of the means of class influence, class struggle, class education. Literature is a powerful weapon. Naturally , that in the case when the enemy is armed with these weapons, they must be recognized as harmful, dangerous...
Zamyatin is positively confused, it is difficult, impossible for him to get out, then he resorts to paradoxes and begins to clown around: “Even if the answers are wrong, even if the philosophy is erroneous, errors are more valuable than truths: truth is machine, error is living, truth calms, error worries” and etc. And then,” he continues, “after all, in the end it’s all the same: “all truths are erroneous.”
Having performed these verbal tricks, which he calls dialectics, Zamyatin ends like this: “Put a police officer or a commissar in a cart - the cart still remains a cart.” This is where the main mistake of Zamyatin and others like him is. Our enemies of all stripes do not cease to repeat this “truth”: they say there was a tsarist army, and now there is a Red one, but there is no difference, just as there is no difference between the police and the former police, between the GPU and the former secret police, etc., etc.
Meanwhile, a cart under a commissar is far from the same as a cart under a police officer. The guns that fire at the command of the Bolsheviks are something completely opposite to the tsarist cannons, and the bourgeoisie and the nobility should have learned these truths since October 1917. The guns taken from the tsarist army beat the landowners and capitalists very noticeably, and our commissars ride around on the carts taken from the police officers. and are in a hurry (while there are still no cars), fulfilling the will of the proletariat and the advanced peasantry.
Zamyatin did not understand this, does not understand. Can't understand? Or does he not want to? - the situation does not change from this. Zamyatin became entangled in his own verbal balancing act. He is confused, and in vain he puts on a cheerful face: his game is lost."
Grudskaya A.
Notes in the margins of children's books. "On a literary post", #5-6.
“A few comments about Chukovsky’s book “My Dodyr”. This book has deservedly been criticized by many lately. Both the text and the drawings deserve the harshest condemnation. In this book we have a unity of harmful content and its equally harmful design.
Unwashed pigThis is a comparison of a chimney sweep with a pig and a pig with a chimney sweep - a comparison of a clean bourgeois who buys his cleanliness with the hands of a chimney sweep. It’s interesting to see what K. Chukovsky would look like if he cleaned chimneys!
Yes, unclean chimney sweepsThese words characterize Chukovsky’s entire ideological position, alien and hostile to us. When the unification of chimney sweeps, switchmen, workers of all categories into a single labor family takes place, at this time Chukovsky fills the heads of our guys with the fact that a chimney sweep is worse than a pig, shame and shame on him, shame and shame.”
Neznamov P.
The girl system. "Print and Revolution", #4.
“In poetry we now have quite a few enemies-friends proclaimed. On the one hand, it is customary to slightly finish them off, and on the other, it is recommended to imitate their creativity.
This is Gumilyov. In literature he lives unshot; and now it contains not only his poems, which often serve as interlinear interlinear for young poets, but also his formulations...
The poems of N. Zabolotsky (“Columns”) differ from the most pious and autocratic lyric service of the poets of the “literary pages” by their grotesque construction. In them, he reduces Faust to Kuzma Prutkov and, remaining a science fiction writer, immediately winks at his phantasmagoria.
On the one hand, he does not want to talk about anything seriously, but on the other, he can write “about drinking a glass of vodka” while talking with the worlds. He is a very capable parodist and a principled guy, he works well in jargons and dialects, but his main element is mockery...
In general, his tongue loosens only near cesspools, and his eloquence dawns on him only when he is adjacent to a pub or a bedroom. This is Vaginov No. 2...
All this would not be worth mentioning if such poetry and such artistic methods as Zabolotsky’s were not spoken of as innovative, and if “alarming notes of despair” were not seriously revealed in his poems.
No, since the poems of this seasoned stylist are taken seriously, it must be said once and for all that innovation is not eccentricity. The right to experiment is not at all the right to insanity, and without social work poetry, without work for the cause of the proletariat, does not exist.
From a genre point of view, his poems may be interesting, but not for a Soviet activist.
The time has come to look at poetic production politically: whether the poet works or does not work for the proletarian revolution, if he does not work, he is excluded. We stand for beautiful intolerance.
And from this point of view, Zabolotsky’s poems are socially defective . If you decipher them, you get terrible conclusions. And no amount of luck in the narrow literary sense will cover them...
...These poems are not fresh. They are something between a second youth and a dog's old age.
If we talk about style, then - in style it resembles a bed."
Klychkov S.A.
Visiting the cranes. 7th book of poems. - M.
“The figure of Klychkov in our literature is quite defined. He is a real kulak writer. A number of his prose works (“Chertukhinsky Balakir”, “Sugar German”, “Prince of Peace”) are a whole system of kulak philosophy.
The new book of his poems (“Visiting the Cranes”) remained, like the previous one (“Talisman”), at the average level of “Russian” poetry (as opposed to the very rich and intense prose), once again demonstrating “strength” and “indestructibility "the class-hostile nature of Klychkov's creativity to the proletariat...
While stating in Klychkov’s book the presence of all the obscurantist reactionary moods characteristic of his work as a whole, we must nevertheless note with satisfaction one very positive political indicator: a stream of gloom, a desire to renounce life, a confession that: “the soul has reached the frenzy of life in furious captivity,” in a word, all indicators of impotence , or rather, impotent anger , are much stronger in this book than in all previous ones. This means that the blows of the proletarian dictatorship hit the target and, crushing the position of the kulak in politics and economics, force him to admit his abstraction in poetry and prose." ( O. Beskin. "Red Nov", #5).
Libedinsky Yu.N.
The birth of a hero. (Novel). - L.
“Proletarian literature has come close to the task of mastering the method of dialectical materialism and developing its own proletarian style. However, in order to more successfully accomplish this task, it is necessary, first of all, to overcome the theoretical errors that occur in the proletarian literary movement.
One of these errors that hinders the development of proletarian literature is the theory of “direct impressions of Comrade Libedinsky ...
Comrade Libedinsky set himself the task of clarifying the specifics of art. And so, in search of the distinctive feature of art, Comrade Libedinsky came to the conclusion that he declared that the most characteristic feature of art is that art reproduces immediate impressions .
The theory of immediate impressions of Comrade Libedinsky has its source in the idealistic aesthetics of Bergson and is in the closest family connection with the idealistic positions of A. Voronsky.
The theory of direct impressions leads to admiration for spontaneity and belittlement of the role of consciousness.
This idealistic theory, unacceptable for proletarian literature, received concrete embodiment in Comrade Libedinsky’s novel “The Birth of a Hero.”
Therefore, the more decisively and quickly the theory of immediate impressions is rejected, the faster and more firmly proletarian literature will follow its truly “high road”, along the road of dialectical materialism .
Bely A.
At the turn of two centuries. Memories. - M.-L.
“Bely’s book is outgrowing the memoir genre. On the one hand, it is a kind of preliminary research, on the other, it is a work of fiction and perhaps one of Bely’s best works. The book is undoubtedly readable, although Bely has not yet completely said goodbye to the tedious rhythmicity of prose and with unjustified inversions...
If the first two parts of the book are “negative”, containing almost naturalistic sketches of the “apostles of humanity” (M. Kovalevsky and V. Taneev are especially good) - and are of some interest, then the last three parts of the book are “positive”, depicting the emergence of symbolism in Andrei Bel, cannot be accepted by Marxist criticism other than hostilely...
Bely, bowing in every possible way to Marxist criticism, considers it necessary to kick those critics who call him a mystic (according to Bely, this is “cultural denunciation”) and associate symbolism with the big bourgeoisie. But these were Marxist critics. Bely is waiting for some other critics of the “Marxists” who will equate symbolism with Engels, or at least reject the connection between symbolism and the bourgeoisie...
In vain does Bely assert: “you cannot explain us in terms of the “new”.” Explain! And you will explain how a new form of contrasting the bourgeois understanding of literature with the proletarian one." ( E. Blum. "Print and Revolution", #5-6).
"Revising the philosophical position of symbolism after thirty years ago, Andrei Bely falls into a major mistake, trying to rehabilitate symbolism from reproaches of mysticism. But this does not at all detract from the merits of his memoirs - the mistakes of Andrei Bely, one of the largest representatives of symbolism, are also indicative of the study of this movement as well as his achievements." ( M. Rabinovich. “New World”, #3).
Zharov A.A.
Great competition. Themes of socialist competition. (Poetry). - M.-L.
A sentimental friend. A poem. - M.-L.
Looking at the mausoleum. (Poetry). - M.
Today. Poetry. - M.-L.
Fresh blood. Poetry. To the drummers. - M.
“It is curious that in the list of Zharov’s teachers we find: Gumilyov, Apollo Grigoriev, Karolina Pavlova, etc. But there is no Heine, Freilitrat, Herweg, etc., whose work was journalistically rich and imbued with the genuine pathos of revolutionary action. There is nothing to say about Mayakovsky - he is on the list... of enemies. Yes, that’s right. It’s worth remembering. According to Zharov, “Mayakovsky himself still needs to relearn if he wants to be alive”...
But perhaps during the period of socialist reconstruction the poet reveals more understanding. Yes, undoubtedly, he tries to push away from the motives of peace and confidence - and he pushes away. But very, very slowly. The result is a creative crisis. Again and again the poet strays onto the well-trodden path of phrase-mongering and declamation, and is restored - once again! - sad, stale stamps...
And yet Zharov shows signs of a creative turning point. After the disturbing “Poems about Love” and “Sentimental Friend” - books that marked a significant shift of the poet towards petty-bourgeois lyricism, after all this - “The Great Contest”. The book is weak, clearly helpless, and in no way provides images of the reconstructive period, but it is a symptom of Zharov’s departure from the motives of contentment and satisfaction. True, it is only a symptom , because these motives still resonate strongly." ( A. Vorontsov. Alexander Zharov as such. "Literature and Art", #3-4).

For communism! (To the 13th anniversary of the October Revolution). (Poetry). - M.-L.
“Demyan Bedny did not create and will not create schools,” Trotsky, and after him Voronsky, claimed at one time. This could be said by people who do not believe in the development of proletarian art. But even now, treating Demyan Bedny as a proletarian poet is not enough determined in literary circles. On the one hand, his work is still not recognized as “high poetry" by some connoisseurs of aesthetic art. The same opinion, however, is sometimes heard from some proletarian poets who value his poetry only for its revolutionary merits of past years. Demyan Bedny rather dryly presents politics in a naked agitation and propaganda form. There is nothing to learn from him, etc., etc., although the press is cautiously silent about this. On the other hand, if in the pre-revolutionary for a time, criticism almost kept silent about Demyan Bedny, even if after October, in 1923, L. Sosnovsky reproached her for inattention to the talent of Demyan Bedny, now, finally, she recognized him as a proletarian poet and, moreover, a first-class poet...
Thirteen volumes of his works, more than fifty separate books and collections of more than 100,000 poems testify to the amazing abundance of his muse. His latest poems “Nata”, “What is being done”, “Red Army”, “No Time to Spit” and others indicate that his work continues to develop in an ascending line. It is only necessary that his talent in each work be a model for the masses who listen sensitively to their teacher, the poet." ( T. Ukhmylova. About the literary school of Demyan Bedny. "At the literary post", #8).
Chulkov G.
Years of wandering. - M.
"...the whole book is only about himself, and only in connection with himself. Even a small but characteristic touch - portraits of writers (Blok, Akhmatova and Sologub) are printed by him with the reproduction of friendly dedications. And on top of that, an unpleasantly striking desire to establish oneself , as a revolutionary close to social democracy, almost a Marxist, who understood perfectly well “that the revolution will win, precisely under the sign of a workers’ and peasants’ rebellion.” These lines sound especially piquant in the mouth of the creator of the notorious theory of “mystical anarchism,” a theory in which he tried to substantiate “the last affirmation of personality at the absolute beginning,” and which, in the words of one of the critics of “Literary Decay,” is an attempt to “marry mysticism with progress.” The only value in the book is the correspondence of Bryusov and Blok with Chulkov printed there , but even the notes that Chulkov provided her with are guilty of the same excessive self-promotion.” ( M. Rabinovich. "New World", #8-9).
