Shoe cleaner became a member of the Bogota City Council

In Columbia, a violent discussion of elections in the city council of Bogota, the capital of the country, is now underway. The fact is that the shoe cleaner was elected to the City Council of the capital. These days, 37-year-old Luis Eduardo Diaz says goodbye to his workplace, for the last time it shines on the shoes of passers-by. After a few days, Diaz himself will clean his shoes from the street cleaner. Its monthly income increased from $ 300 to $ 4000. In addition, the municipality allocated Diasa a car and a cell phone laid down to members of the City Council. The story of this Colombian version of the “American dream” is as follows: one of the local politicians whose shoes were polished at this moment, or in a joke, or seriously invited him to participate in the elections. At that moment, no one could imagine that Diaz would become the most popular of all candidates.

Diaz himself still cannot realize what happened to him: "I will pay now. I never thought that a poor man like me could get here and be the most important here. I thought only millionaires were chosen in the city council."

In the official election lists there was no portrait of the shoe cleaner. When Diaz first came to the city hall to give his photo, the guard simply did not let the man in the dirty jeans building. Ironically, it was after this incident that he was noticed. The scandal hit the pages of newspapers, Diaz was invited to speak in a popular television show, and the whole country found out about it.

A politician who gave rise to an invincible competitor with a careless advice, as a result, withdrew his candidacy. Diaz itself begins to be mastered in its new quality.

The pre -election program announced by him is simple - to defend the interests of the poor, to fight corruption that covered Columbia.

It is difficult to convict the most newly -minted head of the City Council in corruption or election fraud. Diaz spent $ 40 on the entire election campaign ≈ exactly as much as it was necessary to apply for registration. It got to the point that Diaz refused to serve customers who jokingly asked him to clean the shoes for free in exchange for voices.
