Dark horse of the Russian Booker 2000. The critics who commented on the award shortlist , for the most part, did not read the novel: they often misinterpreted the author’s name and, deceived by the candy name, insisted that the book was femininely sentimental and sugary. Quite the opposite. “Roses and Chrysanthemums” is a detailed, almost daily chronicle of the ordeals of an unlucky Moscow family from 1943 to 1951. The novel is clearly autobiographical; events are seen through the eyes of a little girl. But all the more amazing is Schönbrunn’s precise, tenacious linguistic memory. The text is 95 percent dialogue; the portrait of the era consists of painstakingly detailed speech characteristics of many characters. “Roses and Chrysanthemums” was compared to the stories of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, but a much closer analogy is “ Dragonfly Enlarged to the Size of a Dog ” by Olga Slavnikova . This plump, stylistically virtuosic, unapologetically autobiographical novel about a difficult mother-daughter relationship made it to the final of the Booker '97 - and received a consolation prize. RJ fears that the same will happen with Schönbrunn. Although "Roses and Chrysanthemums" is ten heads higher than the generally accepted favorite - " Day of Money " by Alexei Slapovsky.
