But the prospects for its export are not very great
The Russian-Belarusian oil company Slavneft began exporting turbine kerosene, the main component of Jet A-1 aviation fuel. It is used by almost all medium- and long-haul foreign-made airliners, in particular Boeing and Airbus aircraft.
The production of turbine kerosene at the Slavneft-Yaroslavnefteorgsintez plant began in October of this year using technology from British Petroleum, which holds an international license for this type of fuel. The construction of a kerosene production plant with a capacity of 10 to 15 thousand tons per month cost Slavneft $1.5 million.
Now foreign airlines flying to Russia, as well as domestic carriers operating Western aircraft, have to purchase Jet abroad in order to refuel at our airports. So, in the future, Slavneft may receive a promising and extremely profitable market for petroleum products, as well as access to large aviation fuel terminals. For example, such as Sheremetyevo.
Almost all major domestic oil companies are showing interest in the production of Jet A-1, but few of them can actually produce this type of kerosene. At the beginning of November, the Syzran Oil Refinery, part of YUKOS, launched a motor fuel purification unit that makes it possible to produce Jet brand kerosene, but has not yet started producing it. And so far no one except Slavneft produces Jet in our country.
According to some experts, although Jet is a modern and environmentally friendly fuel, the demand for it is low. Firstly, the market price of Jet is about $500 per ton, which is $10-15 higher than the price of other high-quality types of aviation kerosene. Secondly, strict environmental standards have not yet been developed in Russia, and in Europe they will be introduced only in 2005. And so far no one wants to overpay, besides, domestic oil companies, according to analysts, are quite successfully selling RT brand aviation fuel and even outdated TS brand fuel to the West.
