V. Lugovskoy . Dream. "New World", #3.
The daughter breathes in a warm sleep. The daughter breathes in a warm slumber
Snow is flying from all directions.
She dreams - in the Kremlin house
Stalin is sleeping and dreaming.
He sees the station house,
Snow, platforms, trains.
Cars are knocking behind the wall,
Water is dripping in the kitchen.
The girl is full, washed,
He dreams in a warm house.
Hidden in her quiet sleep
All the peace of the country.

New people - new books. "Literary Critic", #7.
“When many thousands of readers warmly fell in love with Pavel Korchagin as a living, beautiful and close person, admired the heroes of the “Pedagogical Poem” with admiration and joy, proved with precisely this love and joy that before us is truly great art, he made our critics think not only about these two books. He made me think seriously about the very essence of new art. For the reader said: here is something new in art that you have not seen... What is truly new that these books brought to art along with other best works our literature?
It consists in a new principle of depicting a person, based on an understanding of the new essence of labor in a socialist society, which decisively changes the very nature of man - all the seemingly “eternal” laws of his life.
It is on this path, on the path of penetration into the new laws of the inner life of man, that all the true conquests and discoveries of Soviet art are located."
Martynov L.
Poems and poems. - Omsk.
“In 1937, Leonid Martynov’s poem “The True Story of Uvenkai” was published in Siberian Lights, which immediately attracted attention. Everything about it was unusual - the choice of topic, unusual characters, and the very structure of speech - free, conversational, does not fit into measured quatrains. The poem was written not in lines, but in phrases, and not only was written, but also printed. Iambic sounded unusual, the lines - sometimes short, sometimes long - clung to each other like links - they gave some kind of a new sense of meter. The pauses in the rhymes softened, and the main, semantic pauses came to the fore. The poem was printed this way not for the sake of originality: as soon as you read the first two or three pages, it became clear that it was impossible to print it otherwise...
They're firing. And from the distant mountains, biting my lip with laughter,- That's right, isn't it good?
- Yes, it’s good, and above all it’s good that I want to repeat this poetic phrase, I want to tell it to people, admire it as a find...
So this is an out of the ordinary case?
Yes, it seems to me so.
“The True Story of Uvenkai” is a thing written with brilliance. You can be indifferent to historical poetry, you can internally disagree with the poetic manner of the author, you can not succumb to the charm of Siberia, space, time, which is inherent in the poem, but one cannot help but admit that in the sense in which Martynov wrote his work, he managed to do it perfectly: smartly, seamlessly...
Now a book of Martynov’s poems has been published in Omsk. In addition to small poems, it contains two poems - “Seeker of Paradise” and “Poem about the Russian Engineer”.
All three poems are written in very different ways in appearance; If in “Uvenkoe” conversational intonation predominates, then “Paradise Seeker” is written quickly and intensely, “Poem about a Russian Engineer” is written smoothly, unhurriedly, even deliberately monotonously, this is the calmness of the surrounding, the habitual, hopeless monotony of everything that happens around, sharply emphasizing the inner the tragedy of the poem.
All three poems are at a level where you can accept or reject them as a whole, but there is no point in engaging in flea hunting and petty dispute of particulars...
And so, if we consider Martynov’s three poems from this point of view, they have one serious and not as easily corrected flaw as it might seem at first glance. I'm talking about the too even thoroughness with which almost all of Martynov's poems are written. The author seems to always stand at almost the same distance from the objects and events depicted; they pass before his eyes on almost the same scale...
Observing too consistent economy, Martynov sometimes leaves things unsaid in important, decisive places and, on the contrary, sometimes says unnecessary words about insignificant things. This is why Martynov’s poems, generally speaking, are very laconic, but at some moments they tire and seem a little drawn out.
This principle of equal distance is part of the author’s arsenal of techniques, but, not always skillfully used, it ceases to be a technique and becomes an annoying drawback, which is perhaps worth thinking about." ( K. Simonov . Three poems. "Literary Newspaper", #38 ).
Paustovsky K.
Novels and stories. - M.
“Reading Paustovsky is like riding on a choppy sea, when you are suddenly lifted up, then moved forward, then imperceptibly carried aside. The main text of the stories is interrupted by inserted episodes, lyrical digressions or contemplative pictures of nature. The area of direct vision and sensations constitutes the main material of his writings, and often, wanting to create something large, he gives only a series of episodic observations, notes and landscapes, alternating, perhaps not entirely logically, but always with great sincerity and spontaneity. It seems natural and understandable, like the slow rocking of a boat in a gentle and undisturbed motion." ( S. Solovyov . "Literary newspaper", #40).
Ivanov Vs.
Parkhomenko. - M.
“Before us is a new, outstanding work of Soviet literature written on a military theme - the novel by Vsevolod Ivanov “Parhomenko”.
"Parkhomenko" has just come out of print. Courageous book! The writer's talent in the novel reached ideological maturity and developed unusually powerfully. Enriched by the experience of life, guided by the theory of Marxism-Leninism, the artist saw the world differently, it revealed itself to him in all its diversity, complexity and inconsistency, in the fierce struggle of the new with the old. What was previously unclear to the writer now came out in relief and became his complete property. He had previously only guessed about many trends and patterns of Soviet reality, but now they are clearly visible to him, and hence the great depth and historical truthfulness of his new work...
With the novel "Parkhomenko" the author... gave a vitally specific, generalizing image of the Bolshevik proletarian. He penetrated into the character of this leading fighter, who actively created the socialist revolution not only in the days of the uprising and after it on the fronts and in the rear, but also in the dark years of tsarism... The novel does not reflect particular episodes of the civil war, but gives a holistic picture of the entire historical process , depicts the clash of many struggling forces, reveals the most typical and characteristic features of the revolution, the laws of its development... The enormous impressive power of "Parkhomenko" lies in the fact that the artist in it revealed and truthfully showed the main historical meaning of the civil war in Russia, as a truly popular , a patriotic war that forever freed millions of people from centuries of slavery and oppression. The novel beautifully depicts the unprecedented revolutionary upsurge of the masses, the unleashing of noble forces hidden among the people." ( A. Volozhenin . About the new novel by Vsevolod Ivanov. "New World", #4).

General educational tour of the editorial offices. "Literary Contemporary", #7-8.
“For several years we have closely observed the work of our literary executive editors here and there.
By its nature, editorial work proceeds vigorously, but privately. Secretly because the main dialogues between the author and the editor take place in offices behind closed doors.
Behind these closed doors, invisible, full-fledged author's tears often remain unknown to readers. But what appears in print after editorial editing often causes bitter laughter in the reader.
Don't rush to throw stones at the author! Give us your hand, dear reader, and we will lead you through the editorial offices.
So, meet: Aplombov. Editorial experience - 7 months.
For five months he listened. On the sixth I joined the stream of literature. On the seventh I turned around.
Author:
“The tops of the mountains were covered with eternal snow, while young greenery was blooming in the valleys. The spring wind hummed in the gorges.”
Aplombov:
“Your nature is contradictory and chaotic: there is snow on the mountains, greenery in the valleys, wind in the gorges. This disorients the reader.
The "tops" must be removed. Every mountain has a peak. “Eternal snow” is deeply not our image. Less eternity, more forward movement.
Let's try to go down to your valley. Why do the greens bloom? It's ambiguous. We need to give a fresh image:
“Young greenery appeared in the valley in the form of buds, flowers, leaves.”
And most importantly: the hum of the spring wind does not coincide with the state of the hero who is sleeping with you at this time. One of two things: either your hero must wake up, or the wind must subside."
Aplombov looked at the author with his beautiful but cold eyes and continued:
“These are all little things, little things. I also have deeply business proposals that I would like to put in categorical form. Destroy seven chapters in the first part, completely replace the middle and make three versions of the end, then we will come to resolving the main question: is it suitable whether the thing is for printing or not."
And Aplombov looked at the author again with his incredibly beautiful eyes, which now reflected the great Arctic Ocean...
Give us your hand, dear writer, we will return to the conversation about editors mutilating your works in the ominous silence of publishing offices."
