The trial of Igor Sutyagin, one of Russia's leading analysts on military-political issues, accused of spying for the United States, began yesterday in the Kaluga Regional Court. The official, who held the post of head of the military-technical policy sector of the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was arrested by FSB officers in October last year. According to investigators, Igor Sutyagin collaborated with the CIA and US military intelligence for several years, transferring to them secret analytical materials about the state and deployment of Russian army units. This process has been declared closed, but it may well continue the series of espionage scandals of recent years - according to the investigation, Sutyagin himself was not an official secret bearer, but learned state secrets from the leadership of the Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who engaged him as an expert.
