The Winter Festival "Art Square" appeared a year ago at the peak of the summer festival of the Mariinsky Theater "Stars of the White Nights". A group of young managers suggested that the Khudruk of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Yuri Temirkanov project, which he could not refuse. The idea of rivalry with Valery Gergiev looked too seductive, whose "stars" were already spinning properly ( Placido Domingo , Riccardo Muti and other world stars even took part in them). It turned out that it was not so easy to lure the pampered intorist on the frosty St. Petersburg night, even with the help of musical delicacies. To overcome this complexity, the organizers of the festival came up with a New Year's ball in the Yusupovsky Palace with fireworks, extravaganzes, music and dinner. Festive amusements have borne fruit.
This year, the "Square of Arts" invited many young musicians with names. Evgenia Kisina in St. Petersburg is still remembered by a child prodigy in a pioneer tie. The violinist Ilya Grindolz arrived on the holidays from New York, where he was studying at the Great Yitzhak Perlman at the Julian school. Pianist Peter Laul has just graduated from the conservatory and managed to win a bunch of bonuses at prestigious competitions. Of the artistic "bison", the invitation of Temirikanov was accepted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Natalya Gutman , Yuri Bashmet . And, of course, Valery Gergiev, who never misses the opportunity to demonstrate his respect for Temikanov, from whom he received the Mariinsky Theater.
The opening of the festival turned into the benefit of Kisin. The image of the star boy disappeared, only Kisin touched the keys of the piano. The main theme of the second piano concert of Prokofiev was played strictly and imperiously. The "adulthood" of the interpretation and accurate calculation looked unexpected. It was felt that the margin of safety in the Kisin interpretation was high.

Kisina was supported by the main St. Petersburg orchestra (the official name is the Honored Collective of the Republic, the household is “merit”), which has not shone recently. For a long time behind the era of Evgeny Mravinsky, when the essay was performed publicly only rehearsed to the smallest details. Or, as Mravinsky himself used to say, "Cars of the nails." The orchestra gradually loses not only the coherence and accuracy of the game, but also a unique sound.
To maintain an orchestral tone, the conductor is important (now Temikanov heads it). This wiped thought was recently illustrated by concerts "Merit" with two Moscow conductors: Vasily Sinai and Alexander Lazarev. If the orchestra played decently and with dignity - but nothing more, then under the leadership of Lazarev, the musicians, the musicians, found the Prokofievskaya "Fairy Tale of the Jester, the seven joccades of the crossing." You can also recall the arrival of Estonets Nema Yarvi, who in two rehearsals brilliantly prepared the “fantastic” symphony of Berlioz and the eighth Symphony of the Dvorzhak. So the St. Petersburg orchestra is a "instrument" is quite working.
The festival will last until January 6.
