The past four days turned out to be around the Oscars - and therefore not very fruitful for publications about belles lettres. The best of them is an article by Andrei Nemzer , timed to coincide with the publication of the fifth and final volume of Vladimir Nabokov’s “Collected Works of the Russian Period” (St. Petersburg: Symposium). It is curious that Nemzer, without any pretense, qualifies the St. Petersburg Nabokovian with the word “project.” But, I remember, back at the end of December he said : “I don’t even understand what a book project is. So, please, write it . ” The contradiction here is apparent. A seasoned project is like a brown bear. It is endemic in the forests of the middle zone, but if you come across it nose to nose, you will not confuse it with anyone else.

Milorad Pavic condescended to talk with the translators of the Khazar Dictionary into Ukrainian. For some reason , the Russian version of this extremely pompous and meaningless interview was published by a reputable paper weekly. Two well-known critics of the new generation simultaneously liked the battle-erotic novel by Mikhail Kononov . To the paper N, “The Naked Pioneer,” despite its status-puberty, looked very good , and to the paper-online O great, in full swing , it looked . A popular online newspaper published response publicist P's to "Macho Men Don't Cry Ilya Stogoff's . " Probably in loudly boiling practice P like this is called a friendly review. The beginning: “It feels like the writers put their faith in literature. The vast majority of texts come from the pens of non-writers . ” Everything here is emblematic: both impeccable formal logic and the “huge majority.”

appeared in Vesti.ru Yesterday, an article by Artem Lipatov , which at first glance is dedicated to the difficult fate of the American prose writer John Kennedy Toole (1937-1969), and at one and a half, three and twelfth - to the famous Internet resource " Language Shop ", where it was recently published the novel by this same Tula, “A Conspiracy of Dunces.” In the “brilliant” (A. Lipatov) Russian arrangement by the founder and permanent owner of “Lavka” Maxim Nemtsov.
According to Lipatov, “A Conspiracy of Dunces” “introduces colors into the picture of America in the 60s that we have never seen - New Orleans dialect that we have never heard before and unprecedented characters... It is filled with a very peculiar aroma of the American South... But don’t expect Louis-Armstrong's coloring is a white New Orleans, which we do not know at all; however, the only black character is described by Toole with magnificent wit and love . "
Navigation in the “Language Shop” is not for the faint of heart, and for some reason the “Vesti” material does not contain a link to the text under review. However, I was so intrigued that I found Nemtsov-Tula’s masterpiece in the archive . And I read it overnight. This is the magnificent wit and love with which Maxim reproduces the direct speech of the “only black character”:
"- Hey! I'm sure it's a bird's business here. The white peoples are always jumping around with film slats. Wait, it's rainy - the people will find out what the bird is sniffing at them at Night Tech. Yes, you have a real door here to stand here. She'll be in trouble with her affairs. Whoa!.. Darlina and we'll jump around, they'll straighten out the squiggles. Fuck, the girl is just so creative, wait, she's starting. She needs a chance . "
Yes, the flavor of Louis Armstrong is nowhere near here. And if you also take into account that the central characters, a mother and son with a pure-blooded Irish surname, Reilly, every now and then exchange phrases like “darling” , “hold your tail with a pistol” , “I beg you!” , “Finnish people sing Romances” , “Mother, I’m quite busy at the moment” - we will make a sensational linguistic discovery. It turns out that “the New Orleans dialect that we have never heard before” is like two peas in a pod to the jargon of Odessa Privoz that we have heard many times. More precisely - to the false, vulgarized, castrated version of this jargon, which was adopted in the humorous television program "The Gentleman Show".
“Nemtsov and his page are worthy of a separate conversation ,” says Artem Lipatov. He is a thousand times right, but the conversation would be extremely unpleasant. There are many places on the RuNet where systematic mockery of native speech is carried out, but only the “Language Shop” mocks it in such a fundamental and multifaceted way: after all, foreign literature per se, literature of all times and peoples, is also subjected to profanation here.
I have no doubt that Nemtsov is a selfless enthusiast, a fanatic of the translation craft. The tragedy is that nature did not endow Maxim with abilities for this craft, even minimal ones. Although, on the other hand, what a tragic character this graphomaniac is. He writes his indigestible crap for himself duty-free - and is already happy. And Nemtsov is probably doubly happy, because his website is a magnet, a beacon that attracts and welcomes the same ambitious would-be interpreters. Pleasant exceptions can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And the contributor to the “Language Shop” Artem Lipatov, alas, is not one of them.
“I started translating stories from English - just for myself, and Max Nemtsov suddenly took it and posted it... Thanks to him, he is an extremely good person ,” we read in a recent interview with this successful journalist. The cuckoo praises the rooster from afar; The payment block is red.
