The Princess and the Warrior (premiere) . A new film by the best German director of the nineties, Tom Tykwer, author of “Winter Hibernation” and “Run Lola Run.” Starring the same actress, Tykwer's passion Frank Potente (no longer red-haired, but pale-haired). The film is objectively less successful, but much more serious, deep and subtle; the mood is far from the dynamic "Lola" and closer to the meditative "Hibernation", in the tradition of Herzog and Wenders. A nurse meets a bank robber, and both understand: this is fate. The music, by the way, is excellent, written according to tradition by the director himself.

Billy Elliot (festival screening) . The New British Cinema festival opens. Generally accepted as the best British film of the year. Nothing intellectual - an absolutely human breakthrough in the spirit of "Male Striptease", although in a different genre (melodrama instead of comedy). Fantastic performance by thirteen-year-old Jamie Bell, who plays a boy from a mining family who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. The plot is completely predictable, there are a lot of banalities - for example, Billy dances mainly to “Swan Lake”, but all the disadvantages recede before the spontaneity of intonation, which has already been forgotten in modern cinema. Bread and Roses (festival screening) . As part of the New British Cinema festival. The film's director, Ken Loach, is considered one of the masters of British independent cinema, but he is precisely the case when independence remains a matter of content, not form. Loach is a director of proletarians, making films for and about them. "Bread and Roses," his latest work, presented at the festival as part of the director's retrospective, is the most revealing, although, unlike usual, it takes place in the United States. The film is a simple and impartial story about the creation of a union of Mexican cleaners. The best role in the film belongs to Tim Roth, who played himself in a tiny episode.

Enemy at the Gates (premiere) . The film seems to have been deliberately created for criticism from any possible angle. Firstly, the most expensive European project in history (the reason must be indicated - “they found something to spend money on”). Secondly, the film is about Stalingrad (“they understand a lot!”), thirdly, according to Hollywood plot standards, fourthly, all the authors of the film, from director Jean-Jacques Annaud to actors Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law, were inspired by “Life and Fate” " Grossman. But the film, despite the critics, is good, and even very good. No fluffy pathos in the style of Spielberg, an adventurous romantic movie with a charismatic hero and an equally charismatic villain (handsome Jude Law is a typical Soviet sniper who believes in the triumph of good; blue-eyed magnetizer Ed Harris is a purely Baltic SS man from old Soviet films), excellent scenery and a very high-quality script. Malena (premiere) . The new film by the most influential Italian director working today, Giuseppe Tornatore (New Cinema Paradiso), is a nostalgic drama from the history of the twentieth century, about a teenager and a beautiful widow. The widow is played by one of the most popular European models in the world, Monica Bellucci, and the music was written by the famous Ennio Morricone - in other words, the best creative forces of Italy were involved in the film. The film was nominated for several Oscars, but did not receive one. Which, however, does not indicate the low merits of the film, but the attitude of Hollywood towards European cinema, especially - kept within the framework of traditions.

"Traffic" (premiere) . The latest film from Steven Soderbergh , director of Sex, Lies and Videotape, Out of Sight and Erin Brockovich. Again about the current problems of American society, and again, despite the obvious journalistic nature of the topic (drug smuggling), it was done brilliantly. Excellent acting by both established Hollywood stars (Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who are never seen in the film in real life) and young actors, including Benicio del Toro, who is always mentioned by critics in all reviews. "Get ahead!" (premiere) . Youth, clubs, ecstasy, house, hip-hop and drum and bass. We have already seen all this many times. Unlike Trainspotting, Break Away! offers no revelations and no conclusions at all. Just a statement of fact: this is how they live, Welsh youth (here is another difference from Boyle-Welsh: Wales instead of Scotland). It was done very smartly, although not new - clip editing, fashionable soundtrack, dynamic and lively characters. The plot is at the zero level: we met, went to a club, then went out of town, and then the weekend ended. A very positive movie: about fun and love for true friends. "101 Reykjavik" (festival screening) . The directorial debut of one of Fridriksson's favorite actors, Baltasar Kormákur .
