In his last message with a proposal to pay the so -called “revolutionary tax” sent by the Basque businessmen and members of their families, ETA √ a group of Basque terrorists - indicated “modest” amounts from 30 to 60 thousand euros (approximately $ 26,600 - 53,000). Considering that the ETA has yet been calculated in Peseta, this document indicates that the Basque terrorists switched to the euro, the Vedomosti newspaper reports.
And although the organization of Basque terrorists deals with cash, and a single European currency will not be in circulation earlier than January 1, 2002, such a message is explained simply: to contact the ETA and transfer the suitcase with money, it takes about four to five months.
Thus, even before the advent of cash euros, the flip side of the introduction of a new monetary unit appeared: a single European currency will facilitate the life of not only transnational corporations, but also organized criminal groups.
The main source from which ETA finances its bloody affairs is to extort money from local entrepreneurs and members of their families. Since 1968, the terrorist group has destroyed 835 people. At the same time, the Basques-entrepreneurs, as you know, do not want to report whether they pay terrorists. The Spanish police believe that few are paying. A number of recent actions undertaken by law enforcement agencies of Spain were directed against the political and financial structures of ETA. However, now it will be even more difficult to fight the separatists. “The power of ETA, like the power of any mafia, is not in militants and not in explosives,” say experts. “Their strength is in the financial apparatus - without it they are nothing!”
