The main shareholder of TV-6, BORIS BEREZOVSKY (he controls 75% of the shares of MNVK CJSC), said in an interview with ELENA TREGUBOVA that he will use all the political resources at his disposal to preserve the television company.
— Another media outlet was taken away from you... “They didn’t take it from me, but from you!” Each of those who want independent sources of information to exist in Russia. I said this when the state took away ORT, and then NTV. The authorities act very consistently, in strict accordance with the plan proclaimed by the president: building a rigid vertical of power. The constitutional foundations of the state structure have already been destroyed - in fact, the parliament has already been destroyed, all that remains is ruins. The arbitration court's decision is another step towards the destruction of independent media.
— You claim that the Kremlin acts according to a clear logic. What's your prediction for his next steps?
“And then it will come to newspapers and magazines.” Everything will be as it should! A semi-authoritarian government cannot exist in Russia. If they begin to build an authoritarian vertical, then in the end it cannot help but become exactly the same as it was in Stalin’s times. Understand, I'm not scaring! They say all the time: how bad Berezovsky is, he frightens with terrible forecasts. But look: a wrongful trial of journalist Pasko has already taken place. Four years of strict regime for a journalist turned out to be not enough for them! And then it will definitely come to new concentration camps and executions. The current Russian government has already made the choice towards concentration camps.
— What will be your response to TV-6?
— Appeal to all higher judicial authorities. In addition, I, for my part, will make full use of all the political resources at my disposal.
— After the court decision was announced, you made a statement about your intention to publish documents on the involvement of special services in the bombings of residential buildings in Russian cities in 1999. Can this be considered your retaliatory strike?
— I think the question was posed incorrectly. I have long since made a statement about the involvement of the special services in the bombings of residential buildings in Moscow. So this is rather their retaliatory strike - the closure of TV-6. They are the ones who are afraid of any independent sources of information!
— When and where will these documents be published? And what will they contain?
— I will prepare this package of documents by the end of February, and everyone will be able to familiarize themselves with it.
— There is an opinion that you deliberately led the way to liquidate TV-6, since as of the beginning of 2001, the television company had most of its debts, $8 million out of $12 million, to the United Bank, which is actually controlled by you. But it was precisely the negative assets that served as the formal basis for its liquidation. How can you comment on this?
- The formal basis for its liquidation was the statement of reality! All media outlets have been unprofitable since the 1998 financial crisis. And this especially concerned TV channels. The situation at ORT was even worse - I know that very well! Therefore, here we have frankly selective enforcement for political reasons.
— Will you take any part in the future fate of the TV-6 journalistic team? Evgeny Kiselev has already stated that it is possible that broadcasting will be carried out via satellite, cable networks or via the Internet. Are you ready to finance these projects?
“I will take a direct part in their fate.” A wide variety of options are currently being explored.
