January 12 is a professional holiday for prosecutors. Exactly 280 years ago, the founder of the Prosecutor’s Office, Peter I, declared the status of the prosecutor as follows: “This rank is like our eye and attorney on state affairs.”

As NTV.ru reminds, Peter I was the first in Russia to create bodies specifically designed to control and supervise compliance with laws. The functions of the prosecutor were quite broad and were modified several times, especially after the judicial reform of 1864. In certain periods, the prosecutor general acted not only as the guardian of the laws, but also as the minister of finance, justice and internal affairs.

The position of Prosecutor General, established by Peter, was occupied by 33 people throughout its existence, right up to the October events of 1917. The first in their ranks was an associate of Peter I, Count Pavel Yaguzhinsky . Only once in its history has the country gone without a prosecutor - from 1917 to 1921. in Soviet Russia this post was abolished.

However, as TV-6 reports, for the central office of the Prosecutor General's Office the holiday is overshadowed by the decision on the upcoming reduction. Vladimir Ustinov intends to fire 20 percent of employees, increasing the salaries of the rest at their expense. He made this decision after the development fund of the Prosecutor's Office, which accumulated funds received from enterprises, was liquidated by law.
