This year's first major "military" emergency occurred yesterday afternoon in Chukotka - at the remote Wellen border post, a contract sergeant shot four fellow soldiers. While the details of the tragedy are unknown, due to the remoteness, communication with this outpost is maintained only by radio. To investigate, a special commission headed by the head of the North-Eastern Regional Directorate of the Federal Border Guard Service, Nikolai Lisinsky, flew to the scene of the incident from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky yesterday. According to preliminary data, the culprit of the incident is junior sergeant Andrei Rastigaev, who for unknown reasons opened indiscriminate fire from a machine gun. Four border guards were killed on the spot: two officers, a warrant officer and a private. The rest of the outpost soldiers managed to immediately disarm and detain the sergeant, and he is now under arrest until the arrival of investigators from the military prosecutor's office.
