The Supreme Court of Dagestan yesterday began the trial of Ziyavudin Ziyavudinov, who, according to investigators, participated in preparing the explosion in Buinaksk on September 4, 1999. Then, as a result of the terrorist attack, a five-story residential building was destroyed, 58 people were killed and about a hundred were injured.
This is the second trial in the case of the Buinaksk explosion. In March last year, Isa Zainutdinov, Alisultan Salikhov, Abdulkadyr Abdulkadyrov, Magomed Magomedov, Zainutdin Zainutdinov (son of Isa Zainutdinov) and Makhach Abdusamedov were convicted. They received a variety of punishments: from life imprisonment to three years in prison followed by amnesty. Several more people in this case were put on the international wanted list. 24-year-old Ziyavudin Ziyavudinov, detained in Almaty two months after the end of the first trial, is charged under ten articles of the Criminal Code. He is charged with participation in illegal armed groups, carrying weapons, terrorism, murder, causing grievous harm, illegal border crossing and other crimes.
After prosecutor Nurmagomed Kamalov read out the indictment, the court began interrogating the accused. The defendant Ziyavudinov said that in 1998, in search of work, he traveled from Dagestan to the Shalinsky district of Chechnya. Here he, together with other workers, harvested timber. Later he worked in Serzhen-Yurt, where he was taught topography and Arabic. In 1999, during the events in Dagestan, he, together with a Chechen guide, transported food for militants to Botlikh. Then the head of the camp, Shamil Omarov (the main suspect in the terrorist attack, is now wanted) introduced him to Alisultan Salikhov and ordered him to help drive the KamAZ to Buinaksk, where Omarov’s parents were supposed to give him the money they had earned. Before leaving, Isa Zainutdinov joined them. Ziyavudin Ziyavudinov told the investigation that the car was loaded with watermelons and he did not know about the explosives hidden under them until they were loaded into two other cars - GAZ-53 and ZIL (later the Volga was blown up on Levanevsky Street in Buinaksk, and the truck, left at the Buinaksk military hospital, was cleared a few minutes before the explosion). According to Ziyavudinov, he helped reload the sacks and watermelons, received the money and went to his sister in Makhachkala. He heard about the explosions in Buinaksk, but did not think that they were somehow connected with Salikhov. After some time, Omarov called him to his place and instructed him to take two women and a wounded Chechen to Georgia. Ziyavudinov fulfilled the order and went to Tbilisi to rest. Then he moved to Alma-Ata, where his cousin lived. On May 2, 2001, he was detained and extradited to Dagestan.
After the break, Judge Baguzha Unzholov read out the testimony given by Ziyavudinov at the preliminary investigation. The defendant stated that he did not confirm them: “Much does not correspond to what I said.” When the judge asked for more specifics, Ziyavudinov corrected only a few details, mainly related to the Shali camp where he was trained. He denied calling the camp Khattab’s: “I don’t know whose camp this is.” In addition, according to him, the Chechens did not give them weapons: “They only showed us grenades, but we threw stones.”
