Last Thursday, at the famous Russian mountain resort Krasnaya Polyana, located near Sochi, an avalanche covered two skiers from France. As the Vremya Novostey newspaper learned, the snow fell from the Aibga ridge, located at an altitude of 2228 meters above sea level. The avalanche walked along the slope facing Krasnaya Polyana, in the place where the upper station of the fourth stage of the Alpika-Service chairlift is located. Fortunately, there weren't many people there at that moment. The left edge of the avalanche caught a group of rescuers from the Ministry of Emergency Situations who were on duty at Aibga, and the right edge overwhelmed the French. The rescuers were not injured and, quickly getting out of the snow, immediately began to dig out the French skiers. When they were located, it was discovered that both had suffered serious injuries and required hospitalization. They were taken to one of the Sochi hospitals. Skis and equipment of foreign athletes remained under the deep snow, which rescuers could not find. Now all this expensive stuff will appear on the surface only at the end of May, when the snow cover on the top of the ridge melts. According to Sochi weather forecasters, the danger of avalanches in the area of the Krasnopolyansk ski slopes remains high due to the relatively high air temperature.
