The deputy head of the apparatus of the Government of the Russian Federation Alexei Volin believes that Russian society has plunged into excessive and dangerous religiosity.

“Earlier, I said that excessive clericalization of society can be dangerous, but now I am convinced that it has already become dangerous,” A. Volin said in an interview with Gazeta , Interfax reported today.

So the deputy head of the apparatus of the Government of the Russian Federation responded to the appeals of a number of Russian citizens to the Moscow Prosecutor's Office with a request to bring him to criminal liability for "a cruel insult to the feelings of Orthodox citizens." The indignation of citizens was caused by A. Volin criticism in relation to the intention to introduce the teaching of the foundations of Orthodoxy in Russian schools.

“I presented the necessary explanations to the prosecutor’s office, their essence is as follows: I really criticized the introduction of the foundations of Orthodoxy in schools, as well as the foundations of other religions. At the same time, I relied on articles 14 and 28 of the Constitution,” said A. Volin.

Article 14, he recalled, determines the secular character of the Russian state and separates any religious associations from the state; Article 28 guarantees each citizen the freedom of conscience, suggesting both the right to confess any religion, and the right not to confess any.

“In my speeches, there is no religious enmity, on the contrary, they are aimed at protecting the secular nature of the state, which is the best guarantee from religious extremism,” A. Volin said.

The religious razor did not see in the statements of A. Volina and the prosecutor’s office, not regarding them as “socially dangerous”, but, on the contrary, considering them “correct and relevant law”.
