The Supreme Court of Russia on Wednesday will return to the consideration of the case of Viktor Tikhonov, one of the accused of organizing an attempt on the governor of the Kemerovo region Aman Tuleyev. The cassation instance will revise the previously made decision by the new composition of judges.
On August 2, 2002, the Novosibirsk Regional Court sentenced Viktor Tikhonov for preparations for the attempt for 4 years in prison . However, in November 2002, on the basis of the cassation appeal of the lawyers of the defendant, the Judicial Collegium for Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court canceled this sentence and sent the case for a new court trial in Novosibirsk. The board considered that the verdict of Novosibirsk judges contains contradictions and violations of the law.
Later, the General Prosecutor's Office of Russia in the order of supervision appealed this decision on the Presidium of the Supreme Court, and the case was sent for a revision to the cassation instance. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the inaccuracies allowed by the Novosibirsk court do not affect the objectivity of the sentence and should not serve as the basis for its cancellation. Tikhonov’s lawyers also asked to send the case for a new consideration to the court of second instance, RIA Novosti reports.
Until the final verdict has been passed in the case, Viktor Tikhonov will be kept in the investigative insulator of Novosibirsk.
Law enforcement agencies prevented the attempt on the Governor of Kuzbass in early 2000. According to the investigation, its organizer was the head of Mikom’s metallurgical investment company Mikhail Zhivilo, who, through his business partner and a long -friend acquaintance of the Olympic champion Alexander Tikhonov and his younger brother Victor, hired two criminal “authorities” from Novosibirsk to eliminate Aman Tuleyev. However, the Novosibirsk, fearing that they would be eliminated after the execution of the "order", did not fulfill the "order" and turned to the FSB.
Viktor Tikhonov was the first to appear before court. He refused to admit his guilt. Criminal proceedings against Mikhail lived and Alexander Tikhonov are allocated into separate proceedings and temporarily suspended due to the fact that both of them are abroad.
