In July, Bishop Mark of Khabarovsk and Amur will hold seminars on the ethics of business relations for members of the Khabarovsk Regional Association of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (KKOPP). Chairman of the association Evgeny Shulepov told Kommersant about this yesterday. He clarified that the board of the KhKOPP intends to involve representatives of various faiths in the process of moral education of Khabarovsk businessmen. According to the chairman of KhKOPP Evgeniy Shulepov, compliance by entrepreneurs with the principles of business ethics is one of the components of the investment attractiveness of the region, in particular the Khabarovsk Territory. That is why at the last conference of the HCOPP at the end of 2002, members of the association were recommended to observe 12 standards of business ethics in their activities. Mr. Shulepov clarified that these norms echo the ten religious commandments, presented in one form or another in various faiths.
Evgeny Shulepov told Kommersant that the initiative for religious education of businessmen was taken by the Khabarovsk enterprise “Kovcheg”, the head of which is part of the KhKOPP. Most of the Ark workers are adherents of one of the Protestant denominations. According to the chairman of the KhKOPP, he liked the idea, but he decided that it was illogical to begin introducing entrepreneurs to moral ideals with a Protestant sermon. “I myself am not fit to be a preacher father,” explained Mr. Shulepov. Therefore, the board of the association turned to the Khabarovsk diocese with a request to talk about the views of the Orthodox Church on the ethics of business relations. The diocese reported that Bishop Mark was interested in the entrepreneurs’ proposal and promised to coordinate the timing of the seminars.
