UN Security Council authorized the entry of troops into Liberia

The UN Security Council on Friday on Friday approved a resolution on sending multinational forces to Liberia to monitor compliance with the agreement on June 17 on the ceasefire between government troops and armed opposition, RIA Novosti reports.

The resolution proposed by the United States was supported by 12 of the 15 members of the Security Council. France, Germany and Mexico abstained during the vote.

The resolution provides for the provision of the multinational forces of compliance with the agreement on the ceasefire before the UN peacekeeping forces arrive. Their avant -garde - two Nigerian battalions from the contingent of the economic community of the West African states - should begin to arrive in Liberia in the next Monday. No later than October 1, it is planned to begin the deployment of “blue helmets” in the capital of Monrovia.

The resolution emphasizes that Nigeria President Charles Taylor must in the shortest possible time to fulfill his promise and resolve the powers of the head of state.
