The solemn ceremony of creating the first NATO in the history of the permanent contingent of fast deployment forces (SBR) took place on Wednesday at the NATO headquarters in Northern Europe in the Dutch city of Brunssum.
New military units are called upon to act in any area of the world and include ground, air and naval forces.
SBR are capable of starting operations within five days and staying at the place of conduct of hostilities in an autonomous state for a month.
The number of the contingent is 20 thousand military personnel. SBR can perform broad tasks - from local anti -terrorism to full -scale combat operations.
It is expected that by 2006 the fast deployment forces will be fully equipped and put on constant combat duty. The SBR will be controlled by a single headquarters, which will be located in Brunnsum.
