Kenyan police on Friday released the results of an investigation indicating plans by the international terrorist organization Al-Qaeda to destroy the US Embassy in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi in June this year.

As the Associated Press notes, on June 20, the embassy unexpectedly closed for 4 days, and from June 20 to July 8, all flights between Kenya and Somalia were canceled. These measures were likely related to attempts to prevent a possible terrorist attack, but officials did not comment on what was happening at the time.

As is known, al-Qaeda has already carried out a terrorist attack against the US Embassy - in 1998, as a result of a car explosion filled with explosives, part of the embassy building was destroyed and 219 people were killed, including 12 Americans. The embassy did not function for a long time; its work was restored only this year. The new embassy is very well guarded. In this regard, al-Qaeda functionaries decided to duplicate the attempted terrorist attack: it was planned to use a truck filled with explosives, which might not break through to the building, as well as a small plane, which al-Qaeda intended to charter from a private company, stuff it with explosives and send it to embassy.

However, the terrorist attack failed. Kenyan law enforcement agencies do not provide details of the terrorist plans they have uncovered, citing the fact that the investigation has not yet been completed. However, it is known that information was obtained from Salmin Mohammed Khamis, who is suspected of involvement in another al-Qaeda terrorist attack - the explosion at the Kenyan Paradise Hotel in Mombasa in November 2002, which killed 13 people.
