US Secretary of Defense Donald Ramsfeld warned that the returning of political sovereignty Iraq at the end of June does not mean automatically transferring authorities in the field of defense to the new Iraqi authorities.
During a brief conversation with journalists today, the head of the Pentagon emphasized that the issue of transferring authority to the local population in the field of security will be resolved in various regions of Iraq in different ways.
There are about 115 thousand troops from 34 countries in Iraq, Ramsfeld said. Actually, Iraqi forces - police, border guards, civil defense groups - have 200 thousand people, ITAR -TASS reports.
They are becoming more and more active, but "there is no schedule for their liability for solving security issues in the country."
