In Russia, 700 smokers die every day

Tobacco -smoking daily takes the lives of about 700 Russians. This figure was called at a press conference on Tuesday in Moscow a special representative of the general director of WHO (World Health Organization) in Russia Mikko Shynonen.

"The prevalence of smoking in Russia is two times higher than the average in the world. So, the prevalence of smoking among youth aged 15 to 18 is about 30 percent with a slight tendency to growth," Shynonen said.

He said that, according to the state of health of the population of the European region, the use of tobacco products is the cause of 1.2 million deaths, or 14 percent of all fatal cases annually, Interfax reports.

“Of this number, 700 thousand deaths take place in the eastern part of the region. In accordance with this, it can be assumed that daily only in Russia from the causes associated with the use of tobacco, about 700 people are dying,” said Vienonen.
