Aslan Abashidze turned to Moscow for help

The leader of Adjara Aslan Abashidze asks Moscow to intervene in the conflict between Tbilisi and Batumi to prevent bloodshed, RIA Novosti reports.

“I turn to the president, the State Duma, the Senate, so that they apply all possible means to stop the forces whose invasion will bring blood and riots,” Abashidze said, speaking at a press conference in Moscow.

Abashidze called the report that the President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili was not allowed to Adjara: “In the morning a crowd with megaphs came to the administrative border, they said that the president was located with them. But there was no president, of course, with them.”

A little earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Alexander Yakovenko, said on the air of Echo of Moscow that there is reason to believe that Tbilisi plans to resort to force in relation to Adjara.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said that it gives time to the Adjar authorities to form and abandon confrontation. He told reporters about this in the city of Poti. Today there will be an emergency meeting of the Georgian government.
