Law enforcement officers detained two activists of the international environmental group Ecodefense, who on Monday tried to hold a picket in front of the US Embassy in Moscow. It is reported by Gazeta.Ru with reference to Interfax.
As the organizers of the picket said, the event is timed to coincide with the G8 summit starting tomorrow. Environmentalists urged representatives of the G8, and above all the United States, to abandon the Russian-American plutonium disposition program. "This program includes the use of plutonium as nuclear fuel, which can lead to accidents with subsequent plutonium contamination of Russian territories, as well as to an increase in the threat of theft and terrorist attacks during the transportation of weapons-grade plutonium," said the co-chairman of the Ecodefense! Vladimir Slivyak.
Seven activists from an environmental group stood in front of the US embassy and unfurled a large banner: "Group of Eight! Do not fund plutonium production." A few minutes after the start of the rally, the police seized the poster and detained two environmental activists.
