The head of the European Commission will be elected until June 30

The Prime Minister of the chairman of the European Union of Ireland, Bert Achaern, expressed the hope that the new chairman of the European Commission will be elected until the end of the term of office of his country, which expires on June 30.

He told reporters on Friday in Brussels. According to Achaern, the Prime Minister of Belgium Guy Verkhofstadt and the European Commissioner for External Relations Chris Patten are no longer applicants for the post of head of the EU Higher Executive Body. They withdrew their candidates, RIA Novosti reports.

Achaern expressed satisfaction in connection with the "historical event"-the approval of the heads of state and governments of 25 EU member states of the European Constitution. He called the decision of the EU leaders a "fundamental event."

At the same time, he pointed out the need for "ordinary people realize that this is their constitution, which has yet to be approved by the European Parliament."

Achaern expressed the opinion that the acceptance of the document will allow the EU to be "more transparent and democratic."

The chairman of the European Commission Romano Prodi, for his part, called the approval of the project of the European constitution an event of "exceptional political importance."

“We created the European Union in the interests of Europe and its citizens,” he emphasized, indicating that it was necessary to “dispel their fears.” Prodi also spoke out for the EU to occupy a key place in the international arena.
