Generally speaking, everything that democratic societies managed to find out about themselves since they became such can strongly puzzle the enthusiastic democrat "from the street" of the former Soviet Union. Here is the power of money, here is the influence of fashion, and the tyranny of political advertising, and the tendency of the masses to self -hypnosis. There is nothing left of free and conscious will ... If a simple person can only puzzle or upset about democracy, then the rulers of the countries where the main listeners of the Radio "Freedom" live, this truth can introduce - and introduces into sin, into sin. Мне кажется, господин Бутченко, нынешний Кремль не даст такую отмашку. Он не в состоянии её дать. Такую отмашку может дать или диктатура вроде той, которую вы вспомнили, или серьёзная демократия. В России же пока нечто промежуточное. Эта промежуточность не в силах родить твёрдую государственную волю. Кроме того, вряд ли далеки от истины те слушатели "Свободы", которые считают, что наверху нет искреннего отвращения к расизму, явной убеждённости в том, что его место - за решёткой, я к нему. Фашизм в России осуждается для заграницы. Это общее мнение. На нижних ступенях, где всё решается, такие вещи отлично улавливают.
