The technical failure nullified the long-term efforts of the 100-year-old resident of South Africa, Philip Rabinovich, who tried to set a world record in 100 meters running for his age category, Interfax reports.
At the new Mandela Park stadium, this former runner ran a hundred -meter in 28.7 seconds in the suburbs of Cape Town, breaking the previous achievement of the Guinness Book of Records, which since 2002 belonged to the Austrian Erwin Yaskulsky and was 36.19 seconds.
However, at the very last moment, the chronometer, with the help of which the achievement of an elderly runner was fixed, broke. This did not officially make a record result to the protocol.
“I am very upset, I worked so much for this record,” the runner admitted after the finish, which owns a similar veteran record in sports walking. “But I will repeat my attempt in October.”
Rabinitz, who turned one hundred years old in February, is practiced daily in sports walking at a distance of 3.7 miles and adheres to a healthy diet. He is still working, helping his daughter's business. This year, Begun took part in the South African stage of the Olympic fire relay.
