The State Duma accused Georgia of "provocative actions" in South Ossetia

State Duma deputies at an extraordinary plenary session on Saturday accepted the draft statement “in connection with the exacerbation of the situation in the Zerazino-Ossetian conflict and about measures to protect the rights and legitimate interests of citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian compatriots living and located in South Ossetia,” Interfax reports.

362 State Duma deputies spoke out for this decision, one refrained, no one voted against.

This draft application was prepared by four Duma committees - on the CIS and ties with compatriots, on international affairs, defense and security.

"State Duma deputies are convinced that at present the main task is the speedy resumption of the mixed control commission (SCC), including work in emergency and with departure to places, as well as negotiations within the framework of this commission," the draft statement said.

This document emphasizes that only such an approach, despite all the difficulties, has established itself as the only method of solving the South Ossetian problem.

Deputies note that "Russian peacekeepers, according to the recognition of the participants in the settlement process, are the main stabilizing force in the conflict zone."

The document expresses extreme concern with the reports that "the Georgian authorities do not stop their illegal and provocative actions in the Zeo-Ossetian conflict zone." This leads the matter to "make a solution to the South Ossetian problem outside the legal field," the authors believe.

"The statements of some representatives of the leadership of Georgia, in which the provocative actions of Georgian law enforcement agencies against Russian peacekeepers, are justified, cause a deep perplexity of the statements," the project says.

In Tbilisi, the fact that "the aggravation of the situation in this zone puts under a serious threat to the safety of the population of South Ossetia, most of whom are citizens of the Russian Federation and Russian compatriots," the authors of the document constitute a serious threat.

It also notes that the position of members of the OSCE parliamentary Assembly is perplexed, which "in fact, supported the assessment of the situation in South Ossetia given by the Georgian delegation."

"The far-fetched and politicization of the OSCE resolution is all the more obvious that by the time of its adoption, the incident with the detention in the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict of the group of armed persons who did not have documents was resolved with the assistance of Russian peacekeepers."
