Prisoners of Guantanamo will be able to change the legal status

Within 10 days, all 594 prisoners of Guantanamo will be notified that they have the right to revise legal status. This was announced on Friday at a press conference by the Minister of the US Navy Gordon Ingland, ITAR-TASS reports.

According to the recent decision of the US Supreme Court, the prisoners of Guantanamo, mainly seized in Afghanistan and accused of involvement in terrorism, received the right to protect their own interests in the American judicial system. In response, the Pentagon this week announced the creation of special tribunals to revise the status of prisoners.

According to Ingland, they should determine as soon as possible whether a person is really an “enemy combatant”, and whether his release is possible. All prisoners of the camp received the right to appear before these tribunals.

This process at some stage will go in parallel with the previously declared annual revision of the cases of the prisoners of Guantanamo. Ingland expressed the hope that special tribunals will be able to consider the cases of all prisoners of Guantanamo in 3-4 months. He also said that their composition will be named at the beginning of next week.
