At the upcoming in Athens of the Summer Olympic Games, Russia will receive in the amount of 83 medals, including 29 gold. The professor of Dartmut College in New Hampshire, economist Andrew Bernard made such a prediction. He is poorly versed in sports, but he is convinced that he can, with a sufficiently high degree of accuracy, give a layout on medals for all 34 countries participating in the 2004 Olympics.
As Bernard said in an interview with ITAR-TASS, together with Professor Megan Bassie from the University of California in Berkeley in the summer of 2000, he developed a mathematical model for the distribution of medals at the Games. “Everything is quite simple,” the economist said. “We are introducing several parameters, of which four are the main ones. These are the indicators of the country's participation in the previous Olympiad, per capita income, the population is the mistress of the Olympics.”
For the first time, this mathematical model was tested at the Olympics in Sydney. According to Bernard, he was able to certainly predict the total number of medals and the "gold" of the US team and South Korea. However, the economist was brutally mistaken in the performance of Russian athletes. “We predicted that Russia will receive only 59 medals, and as a result, your athletes took 88 medals with them, of which 32 are gold,” the professor noted. “Our model provides for assessments. Based on this, we believe that Sydney's indicators will seriously affect the results of the Russian team in Athens. It will take second place again, but will closely close to US indicators.”
Based on the forecasts of Bernard and Bassi, American athletes will win 93 medals. The third place of the KNR notes - 57 medals, and Germany will be in fourth place with 55 medals. Then Australia go - 54, France - 37, Italy - 33, Great Britain - 27, South Korea - 27 medals.
The biggest surprise, according to E. Bernard, will be presented by athletes of Greece - housewives of the Olympiad. In Sydney, they received 13 medals. This year, Greece will reach 10th place with 27 medals. The main reason for this is the moral factor: Greek athletes will perform on their land.
