Experts from the European Environment Agency (EEA) predict that three-quarters of Alpine glaciers may melt by 2050, and global warming will result in the complete disappearance of cold winters in Europe by 2080, NBC reports.

According to EEA forecasts, warming will primarily affect the south and northeast of the European continent, and the process itself will be more intense in winter than in summer. Precipitation will increase in northern countries and decrease in southern countries, threatening them with serious drought. The drought will be interrupted by heavy and unexpected downpours. By 2080, the average annual temperature will increase by 2-6.3 degrees, there will be practically no cold winters and the change of seasons will become almost imperceptible. Heat waves will become more frequent in the summer, leading to increased mortality at this time of year. In order to imagine what the climate of the future will be like, scientists suggest recalling last year’s heat wave, which claimed the lives of more than 20 thousand people in Western and Southern Europe.

Scientists believe that the main cause of global warming is the scientific and technological revolution, as a result of which the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased by 34 percent and reached the highest level in the last 420 thousand years.

According to The Guardian, one way to save lives during global warming could be a “heat scale” proposed by Professor John Harrington from the University of Kansas.

Harrington says heat kills more people every year in the United States than tornadoes, hurricanes and floods combined, and in Europe, heat killed about 35,000 people last summer. According to the professor, these people could have survived if they had been warned in a timely manner about the onset of dangerous heat.

Professor Harrington proposes introducing a warning system for the onset of dangerous heat, similar to warning systems for the approach of gales and hurricanes. The Harrington Heat Scale is broken down into five levels of threat, from "slightly hazardous" to "extremely hazardous." If a dangerous level is reached, Harrington suggests stopping work everywhere, as happens during the siesta in Spain.
