Nazi Germany, earlier than its allies in the anti-Hitler coalition, created an atomic bomb, which, however, turned out to be too bulky for delivery by air. Therefore, Hitler refused to use it. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, German historian Rainer Karlsch writes about this in his new book, “Hitler's Bomb,” which will be published in March.

According to him, in the last days of World War II, Nazi scientists tested a nuclear device that is similar to what is now called a "dirty bomb." Concentration camp prisoners were used as experimental subjects. Several hundred of them died during these experiments.

The tests were carried out on the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea and in a forested, hilly area about 100 kilometers south of Berlin. According to the historian, work on creating nuclear weapons was carried out by the Nazis in 1944 and early 1945.

It is known that German scientists experimented with heavy water in an attempt to split the atom. To do this, they used laboratories located in occupied Norway. But at the same time, it is believed that the Nazis lacked highly enriched uranium, the main deposits of which are located in Africa and North America.

However, Karlsch in his book proves, based on documentary evidence, the existence of a nuclear reactor and testing grounds for atomic weapons in Nazi Germany.

According to the publishers, the historian argues his case with the help of previously unpublished documents collected by American and Soviet agents. It also relies on modern research, aerial photography and soil radiation analysis.
