| According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the spring flood this year will be limited to certain problems Despite the stubborn refusal of spring to arrive in many regions of Russia, the spring flood, which is inevitably bound to happen, this year will not occur without a “global flood.” This conclusion was announced yesterday by experts from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations at a press conference dedicated to the traditional annual forecast of the situation on the country’s rivers.
According to their data, although the snowdrifts on the streets of cities, for example Moscow, look frighteningly huge, in fact, the snow reserves in Russian open spaces this year are much less than in the past. Accordingly, the flood is expected to be less intense and dangerous. Representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations recalled that last spring was very difficult for them. Then in Karelia, the Leningrad and Arkhangelsk regions, the Komi Republic and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug, it was necessary to blast ice on rivers, including with the involvement of military aircraft, and in the Novgorod, Murmansk and Yakutsk regions, rescuers urgently strengthened dams. Now the Ministry of Emergency Situations hopes that such situations are unlikely to happen again this spring. Although yesterday the rescuers presented the details of their forecast very carefully, without clearly promising anything - neither good nor bad - and stipulating that some problems may still arise during the passage of the flood.
According to the head of the All-Russian Center for Monitoring and Forecasting Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Vladislav Bolov, this year the Orenburg, Kurgan, Kaluga, Kostroma, Moscow, Ryazan, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Tomsk and Kaliningrad regions, Tatarstan and Yakutia may become problem regions. “Today it is already clear that it will not be possible to avoid ice jams on the rivers Northern Dvina, Lena, Lower Tunguska, Biryusa, Yenisei, Ob, Sukhon,” Mr. Bolov noted. - But the congestion itself will be quick and not catastrophic. During this period, only abandoned hydraulic structures and household waste dumps will pose a particular danger, due to which outbreaks of infections of a number of diseases may occur - such as anthrax, malaria, and tick-borne encephalitis. Severe contamination of ground and surface waters is expected in North Ossetia.”
As for Moscow, where snowdrifts near houses sometimes rise two to three meters and still refuse to melt, rescuers also do not promise an “April flood”. According to Mr. Bolov, the degree of regulation of the drains allows us to say that the spring flood in the capital will pass calmly. Experts just do not rule out that there will be isolated drownings in the areas of the Stroginskaya floodplain and Mosfilmovskaya Street due to the low relief and the nearby river. Rescuers expect active snow melting in the capital region to begin in early April.
