According to the representative of the court Takao Arakawa, the verdict was sentenced for the intentional murder of four people, including those who spoke out against the activities of the sect of the lawyer Tsutsumi Sakamoto and his family members, as well as one of the members of Aum Sinrikyo, who tried to leave the sect in February 1989.

"The crimes were committed in cold blood and in their right mind and aimed at self -preservation of the sect," the chairman of the court Niro Simada said during the hearing. The bodies of the lawyer and his family members were secretly buried by members of the sect in the mountains of Central Japan and discovered by the police after on March 20, 1995 in the Tokyo metro, the sect members sprayed the nerve gas of Zarin, which led to the death of 12 people. About three thousand received injuries of various severity.

This is the first death sentence confirmed by the Supreme Court. Twelve other leaders and members of the sect sentenced to execution by hanging are still in prison. Eight of them also appealed to the mitigation of the punishment.

Currently, three members of the organizations are wanted by the police remain at large. Aum Sinrikyo changed the name to "Alef" with an official number of followers of two thousand people.
